Famous People Born In 1755

Known as America’s one of the most influential Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and served as the first secretary of the treasury. He also fought in the American Revolutionary War and was considered as a leading votary of the strong central government.

Nathan Hale was an American soldier, Patriot, and spy who worked for the Continental Army. He played an important role during the American Revolutionary War, volunteering for an intelligence-gathering mission. Nathan Hale was captured and executed by the British in 1776. Hale is regarded as an American hero for his important contribution during the American Revolutionary War. 

John Marshall was an American lawyer and politician. From 1801 to 1835, Marshall worked as the fourth Chief Justice of the US. He remains the longest-serving chief justice in Supreme Court history and is considered one of the most influential Supreme Court justices of all time. In 2005, a commemorative dollar was minted in his honor.

Louis XVIII of France was the king of France from 1814 to 1824, except for the duration of the “Hundred Days” in 1815.  He was the son of Louis, Dauphin of France, and his wife Maria Josepha of Saxony. He ruled for slightly less than a decade. He was not popular as a king.

The founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann was a qualified physician but disapproved of medical practices such as bloodletting that were used back then. He thus formed his system of alternative medicine. The apathy of his fellow physicians in Leipzig forced him to move first to Köthen and then to Paris.

Axel von Fersen the Younger was a Swedish count who served as the Minister to the King of France from 1790 to 1793. He also served as the Minister to the Emperor of Austria in 1791. A diplomat and statesman, Axel von Fersen the Younger earned the friendship of Marie Antoinette Josèphe Jeanne through his diplomacy.

The man who lent his name to Parkinson’s disease, which he described as paralysis agitans in Essay on the Shaking Palsy, James Parkinson was a leading English surgeon. An avid paleontologist and geologist too, he often collected specimens and fossils. He and his son also offered the first description of appendicitis.

Born to traveling actors, Sarah Siddons began appearing on stage as a child actor. Regarded as one of the finest tragediennes of the time, she added magic to the role of Lady Macbeth, and in her last appearance in Macbeth, the audience didn’t let the play proceed beyond the sleepwalking scene.

John Flaxman was a British sculptor. He was a key figure in British and European Neoclassicism. Largely self-educated, he began his career as a modeler for potter Josiah Wedgwood's pottery. He then began sculpting grave monuments and earned a reputation as a prolific maker of funerary monuments. He was married to Anne Denman, who assisted him throughout his career. 

Anacharsis Cloots was a Prussian nobleman who played a significant role in the French Revolution. Born into a wealthy family, he spent his youth traveling across the world preaching his revolutionary ideas. He was a world federalist and is believed to be the first person to advocate a world parliament. He was nicknamed "a personal enemy of God." 

Stanisław Staszic was a Polish philosopher who played a leading role in the Polish Enlightenment. He was also a Catholic priest, geologist, writer, and translator. He supported many reforms in Poland and was the co-founder of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Learning. He later served as the minister of trade and industry in Congress Poland. 

François René Mallarmé was a French statesman and an ardent supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte. Although he initially supported the Reign of Terror, he went on to betray its leaders which led to the downfall of Maximilien Robespierre which in turn ended the Reign of Terror. He went on to support the reactionary régimes that followed the Reign of Terror.

Nicolas Fuss was mathematically gifted and became an assistant to mathematician Leonhard Euler, who needed a secretary after being rendered partially blind due to a surgery. In course of time, he contributed to areas such as spherical trigonometry, differential geometry, and optics. He was also named to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Japanese ukiyo-e artist Ippitsusai Bunchō is most noted for producing yakusha-e actor prints in narrow hosoban dimensions. He is credited, along with Katsukawa Shunshō, for pioneering realistic depictions of kabuki actors. The two produced the three-volume Ehon butai ōgi that depicted prominent kabuki actors of the day on ōgi hand fans. Bunchō also created bijin-ga prints of female beauties.
