His aptitude for the job was discovered when at seventeen he took up a course in refereeing and shortly began officiating in numerous high profile matches. Although retired, he is still involved with football in various capacities.

Chris Leben is an American retired mixed martial artist, bare-knuckle boxer, and referee. From 2002 to 2013, Leben was a popular MMA competitor, competing in popular promotions like the UFC where he won four Knockout of the Night awards. Renowned for his powerful left hand and toughness, Chris Leben is also a former WEC Middleweight Champion.

Mohamed Lahyani is a Swedish tennis umpire best known for officiating the longest match in the history of professional tennis at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. Mohamed Lahyani achieved notoriety in 2018, when he was briefly suspended for offering words of encouragement to Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios at the US Open.

Lou Marsh was a Canadian athlete who participated in a wide variety of sports during his playing career. He then established himself as one of the top hockey and boxing referees of his generation. Lou Marsh also worked for the Toronto Star for more than four decades and is often counted among the pioneers of sports journalism in the country.
