Childhood, Early Life & Education

Jai Courtney was born Jai Stephen Courtney, on March 15, 1986, in Cherrybrook, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Courtney has both Italian and British Isles origins. His parents had apparently named him after the character Jai from the 1966 movie Tarzan.

His father, Chris Courtney, worked in a government electricity company, while his mother, Karen Courtney, worked as a teacher at the Galston Public School. Courtney grew up with his elder sister and aspired to be a musician in his early days.

While he initially attended the Galston Public School, along with his sister, he later joined the Cherrybrook Technology High School in New South Wales. In his school days, Courtney was a skilled rugby player and participated in drama, too.

He later joined the famous Australian drama school Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), from where he graduated in 2008. At WAAPA, he had Viva Bianca (his future co-star from Spartacus) as his batchmate. Courtney also joined a ballet course in college but failed.
