Rise to Fame
In the initial days of her music career, Maia tried singing comedic songs. However, it was not long before she realised that they did not really suit her style as a musician and songwriter. Exploring her own genuine and vulnerable emotions, she penned down songs about love, loss, despair, and adolescent desire.
Like many other aspiring singers, she did a lot of covers at the beginning of her career. Including of ‘Come Back Home’ by 2NE1, ‘Too Dark’ by Frankie Cosmos, ‘Good Little Girl’ by Adventure Time’ (Ft. Donald Glover and Madeleine Martin), ‘Sunday Morning’ by Maroon 5, 'Hey Mami' by Sylvan Esso, ‘Youth’ by Daughter, and ‘Worldstar Money (Interlude)’ by Joji. She co-wrote a song named ‘Fantasy’ with Alina Baraz. Baraz recorded the song with Galimatias, and it was released on June 16, 2016.
One of the first original songs of her career is the 2017 release ‘The Sideline’. After posting a demo called ‘Something’, which later turned into Feelings Are Fatal’, one of her early successful singles, she came to the realization that she could do anything she wanted.
‘Feelings Are Fatal’ was originally released on July 27, 2017, and became a massive success, having been streamed millions of times on Spotify. For Maia, this was a clear indication of her music resonating strongly with her listeners. That year, she also released original songs like ‘Life Online’, ‘1-800-DATEME’, ‘We Used to Talk Every Night’, ‘Something’, ‘Please Don’t’, ‘Hong Kong’, ‘Cliché’, ‘Late Nights Are for Lonely People’, ‘Lil Bamboo’, ‘Stuck’, and ‘Birdie’. Her music has drawn the attention not only of the public but also her fellow musicians as well. She has served as a featured artist on several tracks, including ‘Falling For U’ by Peachy! and ‘So Mean’ by Afternoon.
Mxmtoon has stated that, through her music, she wishes to make her listeners feel less alone and let them know there are other people like them. In August 2018, she performed at the first live event of her career at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles, California.
On December 7, 2018, Mxmtoon put out her first EP, ‘Plum Blossom’, through House Arrest Records. It is comprised of seven songs, ‘Cliché’, ‘Porcelain’, ‘I Feel Like Chet’, ‘The Idea of You’, ‘Feelings Are Fatal’, ‘I Miss You’, and ‘Temporary Nothing’. In March 2019, she embarked on a five-city tour to promote the EP.
Mxmtoon has serious anxiety issues. As a result, she and her team were unsure about how she would react to the extreme pressure that artists generally have to endure while touring. Ultimately, she ended up doing quite well, and the tour was a success. In September 2019, she set to go on the second tour of her career, the Masquerade Tour, during which she will perform all over the US, as well as in Europe.
On May 30, 2019, she released the music video for her latest single, ‘Prom Dress’, on her YouTube channel.
Family & Personal Life
Mxmtoon was born Maia on July 9, 2000, in the United States of America and was raised in Oakland, California. Music has always been part of her life. She received lessons in the violin, cello, trumpet, and guitar, and after she began attending middle school, she taught herself the ukulele by repeatedly playing Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ on it.
The first time she seriously considered the possibility of becoming a singer was when one of her friends informed her that she thought that her voice was “pretty good, even with a retainer”. It served as a great confidence booster, and she began singing with more earnestness.
