Early Life & Education

Dominic Fike was born Dominic David Fike, on December 30, 1995, in Naples, Florida, US. He is of Filipino, African-American, and Haitian descent.

He grew up with a sister, Apollonia aka Apple; a younger brother, Alex aka ALX; and an older brother, Sean. Alex grew up to be a musician.

Fike was 10 when he got his first guitar. He once recalled how his father, Dave, had taught him to play guitar chords. Fike also owned an iPad, and he and his siblings would create music on GarageBand. He once created a Thanksgiving music video, with him rapping and his brother Alex singing.

Fike initially attended the Naples High School and then joined the Estero High School. Following this, Fike attended a computer school and then the Palmetto Ridge High School. He graduated in 2014. Though he joined college soon after, he quit after just 3 days.

Throughout Fike’s childhood, his mother was jailed quite often. He thus spent his days in the homes of his relatives or the friends of his parents. He and his brother Sean would often spend time at his friend Stefan’s guest house, which they named the Backhouse. They would freestyle there.

Later, they formed a rap collective with members such as Slyte, Ike Lysergic, and Seno. Fike also launched a sub-group named Lame Boys ENT.

In 2015, they began performing at music festivals and attracted media attention, too. Fike began uploading tracks on the internet in his high school days. His first YouTube track was a song named Not a Word.

Career

Dominic Fike gained initial fame with his tracks that he uploaded on SoundCloud, working with his then producer, Hunter Pfeiffer. On October 16, 2018, at the tender age of 22, he released the EP Don't Forget About Me, Demos. He had apparently recorded it while on house arrest for battery of a police officer. The EP featured the hit Babydoll.

Fike later served time at Collier County Jail for violation of his house arrest. His EP, however, attracted several record labels, and they made a bee-line to sign him up.

By then, all of Fike’s music released before the EP was deleted from streaming services. Following his release in April 2018, he bagged a deal with Columbia for $4 million in August that year. Fike revealed that he had joined the record label primarily to fund the lawyer fee for his mother, who was fighting drug charges back then.

His single 3 Nights, released the same year, soon catapulted him to global fame. The song peaked within the top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, and the UK. It made it to several Spotify playlists and received rave reviews from outlets such as Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Billboard.

Billboard subsequently called him a Breakout Act to Watch. A music video for 3 Nights was released to Fike’s YouTube channel on April 4, 2019. The track also made it to Barack Obama’s best-of-2019 playlist.

On April 4, 2019, the American hip-hop collective Brockhampton posted a video named This Is Dominic Fike on their YouTube channel. It featured the single 3 Nights. He has also collaborated on several tracks with Brockhampton's Kevin Abstract, which have been posted on the channel, including their hit Peach from Abstract's album Arizona Baby.

On June 7, 2019, Fike released the singles Açaí Bowl and Rollerblades. Roughly a month later, on July 4, 2019, he released the single Phone Numbers, produced by Kenny Beats.

A tattoo lover, he has the initials of the subgroup Lame Boys ENT tattooed on his forehead. He also sports a tattoo of the face of Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante on his right hand. Fike also has an apple tattoo beneath his right eye, as a tribute to his sister Apple. He is fond of coloring his hair in different shades, too.
