Who is Dav Pilkey?
David Murray "Dav" Pilkey Jr. is an American author, cartoonist, and illustrator of children's literature. He is best recognized for illustrating the ‘Captain Underpants’ book series and the novel series ‘Dog Man.’ Pilkey, who frequently uses the pen name Sue Denim, has written over 60 books till date and has won numerous awards, including the California Young Reader Medal and Milner Award. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up alongside an elder sister. His rendezvous with writing happened in elementary school where he created the character of Captain Underpants. During his school years, Pilkey developed ADHD and dyslexia and was often reprimanded for his behavior. As a student author, he entered his first book called ‘World War Won’ in a national competition and won in his age category. Later, he graduated from Kent State University. In 2005, the author married professional musician Sayuri.
Dav Pilkey wrote his first book titled ‘World War Won’ as a student. It won a national competition for student authors and was published in 1987. A year later, he illustrated ‘Don't Pop Your Cork on Mondays’. Then in 1990, he released the first book of his “Dragon” book series, titled 'A Friend for Dragon'. This was followed by the sequels 'Dragon Gets By', 'Dragon's Fat Cat', and 'Dragon's Halloween' which were published in the subsequent years.
In 1994, Pilkey started his ‘Dumb Bunnies’ book series with the first book of the series 'The Dumb Bunnies'. The following year, he released 'The Hallo-Wiener', a children’s book employing Oscar the Dachshund as the main character. He next came up with an installment of the ‘Dumb Bunnies’ series called 'Make Way for Dumb Bunnies' which published in 1996.
The year 1997 boosted Pilkey’s writing career. He released the first novel in the ‘Captain Underpants’ series, titled 'The Adventures of Captain Underpants '. The novel became an instant hit with kids across America. That year, the author also released three novels from his ‘Big Dog & Little Dog’ series, namely 'Big Dog and Little Dog', 'Big Dog and Little Dog Going for a Walk ', and 'Big Dog and Little Dog Getting in Trouble.' He followed these with ‘Big Dog and Little Dog Wearing Sweaters’ and ‘Big Dog and Little Dog Making a Mistake’ which were published in 1998 and 1999, respectively.
Pilkey began the year 2000 with 'Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants', the fourth novel in the ‘Captain Underpants’ series. That year, he also released 'Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot’, a kid’s book involving a mouse who saves the world from evils with the help of his mighty robot. The book generated many sequels, including 'Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot vs. the Voodoo Vultures from Venus' among others.
On August 10, 2010, Pilkey released the graphic novel 'The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future'. On June 28, 2011, he published another graphic novel titled ‘Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers’. In August 2019, the author released ‘Dog Man: For Whom the Ball Rolls’.

Dav Pilkey was born on March 4, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, to Barbara and David Pilkey Sr. He has one elder sister named Cindy. He attended an elementary school in Elyria, Ohio, and later graduated from Kent State University.
In 2005, Murray married Sayuri Pilkey, a professional musician. They don’t have any children.
