Childhood & Early Life
John Stagliano was born on November 29, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, US, into a middle-class family. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, without any intention of working in the entertainment industry.
However, when he was growing up, his country was going through a sexual revolution and was opening up to different kinds of sexual orientations. He was thus exposed to this sexual liberalism while he was attaining puberty.
However, he had no idea that he would be working in the entertainment field someday. He attended high school and aspired to become a baseball player while growing up.
He was also academically good. While he was mainly interested in studying economics, he majored in a wide variety of subjects, such as English, journalism, and engineering.
He decided to do a PhD in economics and become a professor. He moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at the ‘UCLA.’ He became infatuated with the city’s culture he witnessed in the university. Knowing that dance classes would introduce him to beautiful girls, he started training in dance.
He mainly learned jazz and modern dance. He also took theater and playwriting classes. Over time, he developed a deep interest in performing arts and also started attending acting classes. By the early 1970s, he stopped pursuing economics and ventured into a full-time entertainment career.

Career
He began his adult career as a writer of erotic fiction. He worked in Los Angeles for a small newspaper. Around the same time, in the early 1970s, he also began doing softcore modeling to make some extra money.
In 1974, he made his adult film debut, appearing in a hardcore film shot on an 8mm camera. He worked as an adult film actor for the next few years. Around the late 1970s, he also looked around for dance jobs.
Following this, he tried his hands at a new profession, working as a male stripper. For the next few years, he worked as a male stripper for the ‘Chippendales’ show. For the next 4 years, he worked with the stripper group 4 or 5 nights a week. He made a lot of money and contacts during this time, in order to start his own adult film production company.
In 1982, he also started a publishing company called ‘Evil Angel,’ under which he published erotic magazines. By 1983, he turned ‘Evil Angel’ into a full-fledged adult film production company. Despite limited knowledge about the industry, he produced his first adult film under his company that year, with a budget of $8000.
The first professional adult film under ‘Evil Angel’ was produced in 1988. Titled ‘Dance Fire,’ it starred him along with a few female adult film stars.
In 1989, he had the first major break of his career when he produced the first film in the ‘Buttman’ series, ‘The Adventures of Buttman.’ The film is widely credited for popularizing the “gonzo” genre of adult films, a kind of film that attempts to make the audience feel as if they are part of the scenes.
The film series became quite popular. He later said that he had got the idea for the scenes while watching a scene that had Tracey Adams in it.
Some of the early ‘Buttman’ films became quite popular, as they did not show much nudity and only highlighted the buttocks of the female actresses. However, toward the late 1990s, things began to change.
The ‘Buttman’ series became so popular that John ended up becoming one of the major names in the American adult film industry. He produced more than a dozen films in the series.
In the 2000s, he also produced a show called ‘Fashionistas,’ which was performed in Las Vegas.
Controversies
