Howard Deutch is an American television and film director, best known for his collaborative work with filmmaker John Hughes in the films ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’. As a young boy, he was influenced by his maternal uncle, who was a renowned actor of the time, for pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. After graduating from The Ohio State University, he started his career in the advertising department of the United Artists Records where his father was working as the company president. There he directed music videos for artists like Billy Joel and Billy Idol. His directorial debut was the John Hughes-penned film ‘Pretty in Pink’ in 1986. In the ensuing years, he was part of a number of other successful films including ‘The Great Outdoor’ and ‘Article 99’. His television credits include the shows ‘Tales from the Crypt’, ‘Melrose Place’, and ‘Gleason’. He met actress Lea Thompson on the set of the movie ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ in 1987, and after nearly two years of dating, they tied the knot. They reside in Los Angeles with their two daughters.

Career
Howard Deutch started his career in the entertainment industry with a job in the advertising department of United Artists Records where his father was the president. There, he directed movie trailers and music videos for several top recording artists including Billy Idol and Billy Joel. Due to his unique touch, he quickly became one of the highly respected directors in the industry. He soon became the director of the company’s advertising department and was accountable for all marketing. He established his own firm named KMD which specialized in movie trailers and formulated campaigns for several movies including ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Rocky’, and ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. In 1986, he made his feature-length directorial debut with the Brat Pack film ‘Pretty in Pink,’ authored by John Hughes. Subsequently, he directed two more Hughes movies ‘The Great Outdoors’ and ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’.
In 1992, he directed the hard-hitting black comedy ‘Article 99,’ which was also his first venture without Hughes, followed by many big projects including ‘Getting Even with Dad’ (1994) and ‘Grumpier Old Men’ (1995), for which he gained much fame.
Besides directing films, he also directed numerous television series including ‘Tales from the Crypt’, ‘Melrose Place’, ‘Gleason’, and ‘Caroline in the City’. He was nominated for ‘DGA Award’ Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for ‘Gleason’ in 2003 and received a ‘CableACE Award’ for an episode of ‘Tales from the Crypt’ titled ‘Dead Right’.
He got involved in a non-profit juvenile theatre project named ‘The Unusual Suspects’ as a board member. In this capacity, he created opportunities for imprisoned delinquents to partake in theatre productions. He, along with his wife, volunteered to teach for Miami’s NFAA YoungArts program. He also teaches weekly advanced acting and directing classes at Beverly Hills Playhouse. His latest project is a TV series named ‘Proven Innocent’ (2019).

Howard Deutch was born on 14 September 1950 in New York City, New York, USA to Pamela (née Wolkowitz) and Murray Deutch. His father was a music executive and publisher. He was raised in a Jewish family. Howard was much inspired by his maternal uncle, actor Robert Walden. He attended George W. Hewlett High School and graduated from The Ohio State University before starting his directorial career.
In 1987, he met actress Lea Thompson during the shooting of the movie ‘Some Kind of Wonderful,’ and married her on July 23, 1989. The couple resides in Los Angeles with their two daughters, Zoey and Madelyn Deutch. Both of them are active in the music and entertainment industries. He even directed his daughter Zoey in an episode of the TV series ‘Ringer’, and his wife Lea in four episodes of the famous television show ‘Caroline in the City’. Apart from these, he also worked with his wife in the movie ‘Article 99’. Lea gave awesome onscreen performances in the projects while her husband was appreciated for his work behind the camera, making them a perfect match.
