Dean Lewis credits his favorite musical bands for inspiring him to pursue music as a career. The English rock band ‘Oasis’, formed by the Gallagher brothers, has an especially deep impact on Lewis’ career. When he was trying his hands at music composing and was learning to write songs, he came across the band’s 2005 live DVD. He instantly fell in love with the brothers’ way of performing with the crowd and their musical style. Their songs had a major influence on Lewis, who honed his own craft of writing songs by listening to the albums of the band.

Lewis released his debut single in 2016 under the banner of Universal Music Australia. The single, ‘Waves’, helped kick-start his music career. It received a 5x platinum certification from The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). It recorded an official sale of 350 thousand copies being sold and also topped the Australian Artist Singles chart. It also broke into the top charts in Ireland and Scotland. The song became so popular that it was featured in multiple popular television shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Riverdale’, ‘Suits’ and ‘Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments’. The successful single was followed by the release of singles like ‘Need You Now’, ‘Lose My Mind’ and ‘Chemicals’, all being part of his extended play, ‘Same Kind of Different’. All of these singles were certified platinum except the last one which received a gold certification.

In 2019, Lewis released his debut album ‘A Place We Knew,’ which topped the ARIA Charts and featured in top charts in multiple countries, including the United States. The album received a gold certification from ARIA and Music Canada. It featured one of the most popular songs of the year: ‘Be Alright.’ The single topped the Australian and Belgian charts and was featured in the second spot in Norway and Sweden. It received a 6x platinum certification from ARIA and also received a platinum certification in other countries like Denmark, Norway, Austria, Canada, and New Zealand. The single sold over 420,000 copies in Australia and more than 200,000 copies each in Canada and Germany. The album also featured other popular singles like ‘7 Minutes’ and ‘Stay Awake’.
