Career
Cuco developed an interest in music at just 8 years of age. By age 15, he learned to play different instruments, such as the guitar, the drums, the French horn, the trumpet, and the keyboard. When he was just 16 years old, Cuco mastered the ‘Ableton’ music software. He became keen to release his own music independently once he finished high school. In January 2015, he readied himself for his first release, under the stage name “Cuco.” ‘Heavy Trip EP’ was one of the earliest releases of the musician on the internet. The earliest song he released on ‘SoundCloud’ was titled ‘Yeah.’ From 2015 to early 2016, Cuco created several other singles, such as ‘Cupid’s Quiver,’ ‘Swear on a Soul,’ and ‘Mindwinder.’ Gradually, his popularity on ‘SoundCloud’ increased significantly, with him releasing several other songs, EPs, and mixtapes.
Cuco released his debut mixtape, ‘Wannabewithu,’ independently on July 18, 2016. It included the tracks ‘Cupid’s Quiver,’ ‘Lover is a Day,’ and ‘Amor de Siempre.’ He earned both acclaim and an ardent fan base with the mixtape. The tape included a combination of romantic, lo-fi bedroom pop with appealing Spanish lyrics. Around the same time, his cover of the classic romantic ballad ‘Sleepwalk,’ originally sung by ‘Santo & Johnny,’ also went viral. The self-taught Cuco once mentioned that living in Hawthorne had led him to come across different cultures and listen to various kinds of music of different influences and eras. According to him, his sound had been influenced by all such elements.
He released his next mixtape, ‘Songs4u,’ on January 28, 2017. It included tracks such as ‘One and Only’ and ‘Winter’s Ballad.’ One of his notable singles, ‘Lo Que Siento,’ a summer love jam that was also his first bilingual song, was released on May 25 that year. It garnered attention from Kevin Abstract and ‘The Internet's Steve Lacey. According to Cuco, he had grown up listening to the Chicano rap of artists such as MC Magic, Baby Bash, and Lil Rob. He said such music, which included a lot of oldie elements, influenced him to produce his tracks. Gradually, Cuco moved from playing “SoCal” house concerts to proper clubs. He has performed live at various venues across Los Angeles and has had a sold-out show at ‘The Smell’ in June 2017. The same month, he found mention in ‘LA Weekly,’ where he was appreciated for selling out shows at such a young age.
He released singles such as ‘CR-V’ and ‘Sunnyside’ in 2018. Both the tracks were featured in his 2018 EP ‘Chiquito.’ That year, he was part of the ‘Fuck Yeah Fest,’ a 2-day music festival that takes place every year at the ‘Los Angeles Sports Arena & Exposition Park.’ He has also performed at other festivals in the Los Angeles area, such as the ‘Beach Goth Music Festival.’ Doris Munoz of ‘Mija Mgmt,’ who is also an immigrant rights advocate, serves as Cuco’s manager. The singer-producer is presently signed to ‘Interscope Records.’
Cuco has also increased his popularity through his self-titled ‘YouTube’ channel; his ‘Twitter’ account, ‘icryduringsex’; and his ‘Instagram’ account, ‘cucopuffs,’ all of which have flourished with time. He has also come up with his merchandise, including hoodies and neon lighters. His fans are known as “Cuco Pebbles.”
