Famous People Born In 1593

George Herbert was an orator, poet, and priest of the Church of England. Although he is regarded as one of the most important British devotional lyricists, Herbert's poetry is often associated with the works of popular metaphysical poets. He was also a collector of proverbs and his collection was published in 1640.

One of the greatest biographers of the 17th century, Izaak Walton was also a lover of fishing and had penned one of the most detailed treatises on fishing, The Compleat Angler. His notable works also include his biographies on John Donne and Henry Wotton. He was also a staunch Royalist.

The son of Japanese samurai and the second Great Unifier of Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Toyotomi Hideyori is remembered in Japanese history for his suicide at age 21 after being tricked by Ieyasu in the summer Siege of Osaka. Some even believe he had escaped, as his corpse was never found.  

Sultan Agung of Mataram reigned as the third Sultan of Mataram from 1613 to 1645. An able administrator and skilled soldier, Sultan Agung conquered several neighboring states and expanded his kingdom to its greatest military and territorial power. Sultan Agung of Mataram’s life and career have inspired several literary works in Indonesia and he has been declared a national hero.  

Anthony van Diemen was a Dutch colonial governor. His nine-year period as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies proved to be important for the success of the Dutch East India Company. Anthony van Diemen expanded the power of the Dutch East India Company throughout South-East Asia and helped establish the Dutch power in Ceylon via Trincomalee.  

Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens was a major part of the Flemish Baroque movement. He is best remembered for his works such as Allegory of Fertility and known for his signature use of warm colors and scenes inspired by proverbs, mythology, allegories. He also designed many tapestries.

Hong Chengchou was a minister during both the Ming and Qing dynasties. He helped the Qing forces to supress any existing Ming revolts when the Qings took over. He was also responsible for hounding out Ming prince Zhu Youlang from South China. In his final years, he went almost completely blind.

Jean de Brébeuf was a French missionary who explored New France, now known as Canada. He later came to be known as the patron saint of Canada. Captured by the native Iroquois in Huronia, he and another missionary were tortured to their deaths. The Iroquois also ate up his heart.

Though born in Switzerland, engraver Matthäus Merian mostly worked in Germany. Best remembered for his topographical works, he also worked for the publishing house of J. T. de Bry and later married his daughter, taking over the business. His work took him to places such as Paris, Basle, and Nancy.
