Ulla Thorsell is the third wife of French singer, lyricist, diplomat and public activist, Charles Aznavour. Thorsell has always stayed away from the spotlight and seldom ever speaks in public. The former model appears to have no problem living in the shadow of her famous husband. Speaking about Thorsell’s extremely private nature, Aznavour told newspaper Le Figaro that his wife does not like making public appearances and avoids being photographed. He added that each time they step out together, people hound him while his wife is pushed in a corner. Aznavour met Thorsell through common friends and he was instantly smitten by her in their first meeting itself. Despite having been married thrice, Thorsell said that he considers Thorsell to be the ‘love of his life.’ Aznavour told TV 7 that his first marriage failed because he was too young at that time. He blamed his immature nature for the failure of his second marriage. However, he says that his third marriage is different because marrying a woman from a different culture showed him how to be more tolerant.

Family & Personal Life
  • Ulla Thorsell was born in Sweden in 1944. She worked as a model before marrying the famous singer. When she was barely twenty years old, she met Charles Aznavour, 17 years her senior, in a nightclub in 1964, and had no clue of his popularity. Aznavour said that he was instantly drawn to her calm and silent nature.
  • She looked stunning without makeup but what attracted him most to her was her typical Scandinavian honesty.
  • While talking about his affair with Thorsell in his autobiography, ‘Time of the Ever’, Aznavour revealed that after two failed marriages, he preferred living in with Thorsell. She, however, was adamant on getting married and starting a family. Seeing his unwillingness to commit, Thorsell left him to return to her family in Sweden. He tried to get in in touch with her but she refused to take his calls. Frustrated, he returned to San Francisco where he started to feel a void in his life. He once again tried to get in touch with Thorsell and this time she answered his call. Without beating around the bush, he told her straight to find a dress for herself so they could get married. After living together for two years, the couple got married on January 11 1967 in Las Vegas.
  • Aznavour revealed that Thorsell’s ‘Protestant’ faith makes her do things differently which also did him a lot of good. He said that he had to teach her how to let loose and be ‘insane’. The couple have three children - Katia, born in 1969, Misha, born in 1971 and Nicolas, born in 1977. Speaking about his retirement from ‘the Quotidien show,’ Aznavour revealed that his wife had urged him to retire but all in vain. The couple remained married for more than five decades until Aznavour passed away in 2018.
