TheOrionSound or Oli is a British YouTuber. He gained popularity for playing games like ‘Minecraft’, ‘World of Warcraft’, and ‘SIMS’. At the same time, his guitar and piano covers of popular songs are also extremely popular amongst his viewers. Initially starting the channel as a music channel, Oli ventured into gaming to share his passion for gaming and gameplay commentary. He is often seen collaborating with other YouTubers like LDShadowLady, SmallishBeans, SeaPeeKay, and Laurenzside. Some of the most popular videos on her channel are ‘Living As My Sim For 24 Hours’, ‘Perfect Parenting! | Who's Your Daddy w/ LDShadowLady’, and ‘Valentines Violence! | Ep. 14 | CrazyCraft 3.0 Roleplay’ which have brought in millions of views. He refers to his subscribers as ‘Olipops’. The name has also become synonymous with his brand of merchandise as well. His YouTube avatar is a cartoon of him wearing a panda hat. It is based on his actual appearance in his videos where he proudly wears his now famous panda hat which he bought from China.
Rise to Fame
TheOrionSound started his YouTube channel on March 10, 2011, as a music channel, intending to post covers of popular songs. He was also inspired by other YouTubers like Zack Scott and ‘Minecraft’ gaming channels and wanted to create something different and better. It was in 2012, that he started posting, with the video ‘You (A Valentines Stalker Song) | TheOrionSound Original Song’. It was one of his original humorous compositions and an entry for ‘Spintunes 4’. He received a shout out from his friend and YouTuber LDShadowLady which got him the attention of the YouTube community.
Like many others, he initially struggled to get subscribers. It wasn’t until he started posting ‘Minecraft’ gameplay commentary on his channel that he started getting views. His funny commentary combined with his boyish charm was liked by young viewers. ‘The Bedstealer? Minecraft’ and ‘The Walls PvP Tag Team (Minecraft)’ are some of the more popular videos of that time. TheOrionSound hit 1000 subs on his channel on August 3, 2012, and dedicated the ‘Slender 12’ gameplay video ‘1000 Subscriber Special: Brits Playing Slender’ to his fans.
Oli’s growth on his channel was slow and gradual. In 2013, his channel started getting traction after he posted his second original funny composition ‘Turn You On | TheOrionSound Original Song (Draft)’. In April 2015, he announced that he was going to be a part of the ‘Nethermined’ convention in Newcastle along with YouTubers SeePeeKay, LDShadowLady, Joel, and others. Vlogs posted from the convention like ‘Nethermined Vlog #2 | TheOrionSound Band's First Gig!’ were viewed thousands of times and really established TheOrionSound as a rising star.
He also started his ‘One Take Tuesdays’ series around this time with music cover videos of popular songs. Recorded in one take, covers like ‘Bad Blood | TheOrionSound Cover (Taylor Swift)’, ‘Take Me To Church | TheOrionSound Cover (Hozier)’, and ‘Honey I'm Good | TheOrionSound Cover (Andy Grammer)’ became so popular that he went on to release his first album ‘Covered Up’ on iTunes in August 2015. Although the album didn’t leave a major mark in the music industry, it certainly did bring in more viewers and he reached the 100k subscribers mark by February 16, 2016.
Following that, TheOrionSound started collaborating with other YouTubers in 2016. His collaborative videos with his best friend and fellow YouTuber Lizzie or LDShadowLady are some of the most popular videos on his channel. He also collaborated with YouTuber, Joel, in ‘Oli Vs. Joel | Blend Battle Challenge w/ Smallishbeans !’. But fans clearly prefer his videos with Lizzie, as ‘Living As My Sim for 24 Hours’ which is a recent gameplay featuring LDShadowLady, is the most viewed video with more than 2.4 million views. With a growing fan base of more than 473k subscribers even with an irregular schedule of posting videos, Oli’s channel is still growing at a steady pace.
