Suri Cruise is an American celebrity kid who has been under the radar of international media since her birth, thanks to her celebrity parents, actor and producer Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes. Only a few months following her birth, she appeared on the cover of the US edition of 'Vanity Fair' with her parents Tom and Katie in October 2006. She made her first television appearance on 'VH1: All Access' in the episode '20 Cutest Celebrity Babies' in 2006. In 2009, she made guest appearance as herself on the TV show 'Access Hollywood'. Most recently, she appeared on 'The Insider' on April 17, 2015. She has been featured on numerous articles on major media publications over the years, with photographs of her with her parents before their divorce, and with her mother after that, and has been a favorite of the gossipmongers due to the controversies regarding her parents' relationships and her father's faith.
The Meteoric Rise to Stardom
Even before Suri Cruise was born, the international media was obsessed with gossips over her expected birth. While rumors were abound around the high-profile relationship between her parents Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes since they were spotted together for the first time in 2004, after they made it official, Katie's pregnancy became the new spotlight of various tabloids. It was partially fuelled by Tom himself who revealed that he had purchased a pricey sonogram machine for on-demand tracking of fetus Suri's development. Her birth in April 2006 was extensively covered in the media. An infant Suri made her first media appearance, along with her parents Tom and Katie, on the cover of the 2006 issue of the 'Vanity Fair' magazine, which sold more than 70,000 copies. Since then, media outlets have constantly reported on every detail about the little celebrity, from her uncanny similarities to her mother to her incredible fashion sense even as a child.

Behind The Curtains
Suri Cruise was born on April 18, 2006 at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, USA, to Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and his then-girlfriend Katie Holmes, who is an actor herself, as well as a model. Her parents got married seven months after her birth, on November 18, 2006, in a Scientology ceremony at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. The ceremony was reportedly organized by the Church of Scientology, which is also rumored to have a hand in making the match. The event was attended by many Hollywood stars. After five and a half years, her mother filed for divorce on June 29, 2012, and a settlement was reached on July 9, 2012. She has a step-brother named Connor Cruise and a step-sister named Isabella Cruise, who her father adopted when he was married to Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman. In 2012, she began attending a new prestigious $40,000 per year school in Manhattan which opened in fall that year. She also trains in ballet and gymnastics.
Controversies Regarding Her Name
Reportedly, her parents chose the name 'Suri Cruise' even before they knew they were having a daughter. According to the written statement Tom Cruise released after her birth, the name 'Suri' has origins in both Hebrew and Persian. While it means 'princess' in Hebrew, in Persian, it means 'red rose'. However, many magazines and other publications have reported that linguists revealed that Cruise misinterpreted the meaning of the word in Hebrew, stating that it actually means 'from Syria' in Hebrew and Arabic. They also noted that 'Suri' is a pet form of 'Sarah' in Yiddish, meaning 'princess', which might be the reason behind the mistake. Interestingly, after her name was made public, netizens found out that 'suri' also means 'pickpocket' in Japanese, 'horse mackerels' in Italian, and 'to sour' in a French verb form. This discovery led to jokes on the internet, which might be one of the reasons why the name, unlike many other celebrity names, did not see wide adoption.
Controversies on Her Parents' Divorce
It was widely reported that Suri Cruise's mother filed for divorce from Tom Cruise because she feared that Cruise would abduct Suri, and also felt intimidated by the Church of Scientology. Cruise later accepted to lawyers that one of the reasons Katie sought divorce was because she wanted to protect Suri from the controversial religion he practices. He also revealed that his daughter was no more a practicing member of the religion. According to the doctrines of the "space-alien cult", those who leave the religion are disowned by the church, branded as 'Suppressive Persons', and are prohibited from meeting even close family members. Apparently, the church made an exception for its renowned celebrity member Tom. However, it was reported in September 2017, that Tom has not seen his daughter in the past four years since August 2012.
