Sophia Smith rose to fame after the news of her relationship with One Direction band member Liam Payne was made public in August 2013. Sophia Smith was born on February 9, 1994 in Wolverhampton, England. She has an older sister named Zoe. She attended St. Peter's Collegiate School in Wolverhampton and later enrolled into Birmingham City University to study fashion business and promotion. She completed her graduation in July 2016. After she passed her driving test in late 2013, her then-boyfriend, Liam, gifted her a white Range Rover for Christmas. She has a dog named Ralph which was a Christmas present from him the following year.

Sophia Smith first met Liam Payne while both of them were studying at St. Peter's Collegiate School, in Wolverhampton, England. However, while he had taken her number from her sister and began chatting, they did not go out together at the time as he thought "she was way too hot" for him. They were reintroduced while attending common friend Andy Samuel’s birthday party in February 2013. They finally began dating in May that year and he officially introduced her as his girlfriend in August 2013 at a press conference in London. About a year later, rumors of their break up started to spread for the first time in April 2014, but it was confirmed to be wrong as Liam denied the rumors.
