Birthday: September 21, 1982 (Virgo)

Born In: Belton, Texas, United States

Rudy Youngblood is an actor, musician, dancer, and artist of Native American descent. His ancestors belonged to Comanche, Cree, and Yaqui tribes. Originally from Texas, Youngblood did not have an easy childhood. In the absence of his father, his mother raised him. When he was ten years old, he began doing construction works and learned various skills from others at the sites. He attended local schools and was part of the boxing and track athletics programs there. During this period, he developed a deep love for cinema. After he graduated, he received offers of Fulbright scholarships to major colleges in both art and track and field but decided to pursue native dance instead. He had been a member of the American Indian Dance Theatre. Youngblood made his screen debut in Peter Buffett’s ‘Spirit: The Seventh Fire’. In the following year, he played Jaguar Paw in Mel Gibson’s directorial venture, ‘Apocalypto’, which is unarguably the most significant film of his career. He has since appeared in films like ‘Wind Walkers’, ‘Crossing Point’, and ‘Attrition’ and TV shows like ‘Amnesia’ and ‘American Mythos’. Youngblood is highly active as an HIV activist in the Native community.

Career
Before Rudy Youngblood became an actor, he performed as a warrior protector in Peter Buffet’s Native American dance/theatrical production, ‘Spirit: The Seventh Fire’ for three seasons. The DVD version of the show, which was released in 2005, was his first on-screen appearance.
Answering a regular casting call, Youngblood landed the role of Jaguar Paw, the protagonist, in Mel Gibson’s 2006 epic adventure film ‘Apocalypto’. He chose to perform all his stunts and was taught Yucatec Maya language, so he could play a tribesman in the film. All the characters in the movie spoke in the Mayan language. Released on 8 December, the film was a critical and commercial success. It earned over $120 million against its $40 million budget at the global box office. The critics gave positive reviews on Gibson’s direction, Dean Semler's cinematography, and the performances of Youngblood and the rest of the cast, as well as the portrayal of the Mayan civilization. ‘Apocalypto’ was nominated for three Academy Awards and garnered Youngblood the FAITA Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in 2007.
His next film was the 2010 action-crime-thriller ‘Beatdown’. His character in the film, Brandon, is a well-known streetfighter who arrives at a small Southern town and joins the local underground cage-fighting circuit. Besides Youngblood, the film also starred Danny Trejo and Eric Balfour. In 2015, he appeared in the short film ‘Shepherd’s Blade’ and an episode of the short-lived series ‘Amnesia’. He worked with Shawn Lock, Paulina Gaitan, and Tom Sizemore in the 2016 action-thriller ‘Crossing Point’.
In 2018, he played Elijah One Tooth in an episode of ‘American Mythos’. That year, he shared the screen space with Steven Seagal and Siu-Wong Fan in Mathieu Weschler’s action film ‘Attrition’. Youngblood is set to star in the upcoming biographical western ‘Hell on the Border’ and dramas ‘Gleichschaltung’ and ‘The Moment’. He will also appear in the TV series ‘In-Security’.

Family & Personal Life
Rudy Youngblood was born Rudy Gonzalez on September 21, 1982, in Belton, Texas, USA. His father was not involved in his upbringing. As a result, his mother raised him, along with his two younger sisters, on her own. When he was ten years old, he landed his first job as a construction worker. Due to his many interactions with the men there, he acquired many skills and was told several stories. He received valuable informal lessons on carpentry, bricklaying, and other skills. He was a student at local schools and participated in boxing and track athletics events during his time at Belton High School. During this period, he regularly went to the theatre to see films and started harbouring a deep interest in them. Following his graduation, he was given the opportunity to attend several major colleges on Fulbright scholarships in both art and track and field. He declined as he wanted to pursue a career as a performer of the native dance. At one point, he was part of the American Indian Dance Theatre.
After ‘Apocalypto’ became a major success, the ‘Los Angeles Times’ published an article in which they speculated that his Native American ancestry had been called into question. However, Youngblood has refused to entertain such claims.
Youngblood’s mother was an alcoholic and was not particularly a good parent. As a result, he grew up taking care of his sisters. However, they have since reconciled. He witnessed the death of a family member due to AIDS-related complications and realised the need to “give back and make a difference”. He has been one of the most prominent AIDS activists in the Native American community, taking part in AIDS walks, making appearances in front of HIV-positive children in hospitals, and garnering attention towards the rate of HIV infection among Native Americans. He has been vocal about the significance of education in fighting ignorance around HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, drug abuse and child abuse.
Rudy Youngblood was in a brief relationship with American actress Mariana Tosca in 2005.
