Nicole Beharie is an American actress who is known for her role of ‘Abbie Mills’ in the supernatural drama series ‘Sleepy Hollow’. She first came to the limelight after she appeared in Tim Disney’s drama film ‘American Violet’ for which she was nominated at multiple award shows. The talented actress also showcased her singing skills in the film ‘My Last Day Without You’. Beharie provided the lead vocals for five songs from the film, including the title track. She has worked with the Academy Award-winning director Steven Rodney McQueen in his film ‘Shame’. As a performer, she is known for her powerful acting skills and her bold approach towards picking challenging roles, be it on the television or the silver screen. She has often been lauded for her choice of characters by the critics and is tipped to become a big name in the industry in the future.
Nicole Beharie’s application to join their drama division was accepted by Juilliard School. Later on, she went to England to train further. She made her acting debut in 2008 in the drama film ‘American Violet’. Her debut role set the tone for her career, as she took a very challenging role of a single mother to four children. The character, ‘Dee Roberts’, becomes a victim of the Texas law enforcement drug department where she has to fight the district attorney to clear her name from a dubious drug case which could cost her 20 years in prison. Beharie was lauded for her performance and the film was hailed for its bold approach to one of the society’s darkest realities. Beharie was nominated at multiple award shows and ended up pocketing the Best Actress Award at the African-American Film Critics award show.
She then played the role of ‘Sarah Ward’ in the sports film ‘The Express: The Ernie Davis Story’.
In 2009, Beharie made her television debut in the show ‘Three Rivers’ as ‘Helen Reed’ in the episode ‘Win-Loss’. She took another fantastic role in the Lifetime Movie titled ‘Sins of the Mother’. In that film, Beharie portrayed the character of a troubled student, ‘Shay’, who goes through various ups and downs trying to mend her relationship with her mother. The year 2011 took her fame to new heights as she appeared in the independent film ‘My Last Day Without You’ as ‘Leticia Johnson’. Apart from her acting skills, Beharie also demonstrated her singing skills in the film. She provided the vocals for five songs, ‘Two Hands’, ‘Morning Light’, ‘My Last Day Without You’, ‘Catch Me’, and ‘Scars’.
In the 2011 British drama film ‘Shame’ by Steve McQueen, Beharie played the role of ‘Marianne’. The film revolves around a sex-addict, ‘Brandon Sullivan’, and his troubled life. She later appeared in the biographical drama film ’42,’ playing the role of ‘Rachel Robinson’, the wife of the first African American baseball player who featured in the MLB, Jack Roosevelt Robinson.
In 2013, Beharie received an offer of another challenging role, this time on television. She appeared in the supernatural drama series ‘Sleepy Hollow’ as ‘Abbie Mills’. She was nominated at the NAACP Image Awards twice for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, as a result of her outstanding performance on the show. She played the role in 50 episodes between 2013 and 2017 before witnessing her character’s death in the show.

Nicole Beharie is not married. She once dated Michael Fassbender with whom she co-starred in the 2011 drama film ‘Shame.’
