Michael Socha is an English actor, best known for playing major roles in films such as ‘Summer’ and ‘This is England.’ Born in Derbyshire, England, Michael was never quite into academics and was always looking for extracurricular activities in school. He tried auditioning for school theater when he was 11 but was rejected. He somehow began doing theater and later attended the ‘Central Junior Television Workshop’ to further hone his acting skills. Following his high-school graduation, he did not study further and worked at factories and car-wash facilities, also auditioning simultaneously. He eventually began his acting career in 2006, with a small role in the film titled ‘This is England.’ He had his first acting breakthrough in 2008, when he played a major role in the ‘BAFTA Award’-winning film titled ‘Summer.’ Having a critically acclaimed in his filmography, he starred in major roles in films such as ‘Spike Island,’ ‘Walk Like a Panther,’ and ‘Bonded by Blood.’ Throughout his career, he also appeared on TV, playing supporting roles in series such as ‘Casualty,’ ‘Being Human,’ and ‘Chernobyl.’ Simultaneously, he also worked in theatres, participating in plays such as ‘This Is Living’ and ‘Glamour.’

Michael Robert Socha was born on December 13, 1987, in Littleover, Derby, Derbyshire, England, to Robert Socha and Kathleen Lyons. He was the oldest child in the family and had a younger sister, too. His sister, Lauren Socha, too, made a career in the field of acting.
Michael was raised in an orthodox family and joined ‘St. Benedict Catholic School.’ He was a rebellious kid ever since he was little and never quite liked academics. He usually skipped school and even when he did attend, he tried to make his experience enjoyable by indulging in extracurricular activities.
Sometime while he was growing up, he became interested in the prospect of becoming an actor. When he was 11, he auditioned for a school theatrical musical but failed it. Instead of getting disheartened by the rejection, Michael decided to prove himself. It happened when he was 12, when his mother told him about a local audition. He went to the audition accompanied by his sister.
The first role he ever played on stage was that of ‘Bugsy Malone.’ However, he did not take acting seriously until then and was only driven by the desire to prove himself.
His developed a genuine interest in acting when he joined the ‘Central Junior Television Workshop.’ He recalls it being the decisive moment of his life. He participated in several plays after that. Following his high-school graduation, he began auditioning for TV and film roles. In order to make ends meet, he worked in a factory and then at a car-wash station.
Following the death of his father in 2004, he felt immensely independent and became further more focused on his acting career.

Career
Michael made his acting debut in 2006, starring in a small role in the film titled ‘This Is England.’ He played a bully in the film. It was a big critical and commercial success.
Michael continued to audition for better roles, and in 2008, he appeared in a supporting role in the drama film titled ‘Better Things.’ Like his debut film, this film was also hailed critically.
Later that year, Michael had the first breakthrough role of his career when he appeared in a supporting role in the film titled ‘Summer.’ The film turned out to be a massive critical success and earned many awards, such as two ‘BAFTA Scotland Awards,’ one each for the ‘Best Direction’ and the ‘Best Feature Film.’
Starring in such critically acclaimed films had a great impact on his future career. He was offered better roles. One of those roles was that of ‘Ryan’ in six episodes of the series ‘Casualty.’ The longest-running British medical emergency drama is considered one of the best British shows of all time.
After starring in two TV films, ‘The Unloved’ and ‘Harvest,’ in the late 2000s, he appeared in as the lead role of ‘Craze’ in the 2010 film titled ‘Shank.’ However, the film was not received well by critics and was also a commercial failure. The performances in the film, however, received appreciation.
The same year, Michael appeared in the supporting role of ‘Donny Svenson’ in the film titled ‘Bonded by Blood,’ based on the notorious Rettendon Murders of 1995. Later that year, he appeared in a critically acclaimed role, as ‘Harvey,’ in four episodes of the miniseries titled ‘This Is England ‘86.’
In the early 2010s, Michael appeared in the supernatural comedy–drama series titled ‘Being Human.’ Michael appeared as ‘Tom McNair,’ a recurring character, in the third season. However, in two other seasons, ‘McNair’ became one of the regular characters of the series.
He also appeared in supporting roles in films such as ‘Twenty8k’ and ‘Svengali.’ The latter became a massive critical success, receiving a ‘Michael Powell Award’ nomination for the ‘Best British Feature Film’ at the ‘Edinburgh International Film Festival.’
In 2013, he appeared in yet another major TV role, in the series titled ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.’ The series starred him as ‘Will Scarlet in 13 episodes of the first season. However, due to poor ratings and critical reception, the series was canceled.
In 2014, Michael was seen playing guest roles in series such as ‘Inspector George Gently’ and ‘Our World War.’ The same year, he also reprised his role of ‘Will Scarlet’ in 15 episodes of the fourth season of the series ‘Once Upon a Time,’ a spin-off of ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.’
In 2016, he starred in the science-fiction series titled ‘The Aliens,’ playing the first main lead role of his career. The series ran for a season, covering six episodes. Despite huge critical acclaim, it was not renewed for a second season.
In the more recent years, he has appeared playing supporting roles in films such as ‘Walk Like a Panther’ and ‘Killers Anonymous.’ He has also been part of the popular miniseries ‘Chernobyl.’
