Michael Pitt’s television debut was in a 1997 episode of ‘Dellaventura’. In 1999, he made his Off-Broadway debut when he appeared in a play titled ‘The Trestle’ at the New York Theatre Workshop.

In 1999 and 2000, he played Henry Parker in the teen drama ‘Dawson's Creek’. After this, he was cast as Jimmy Darmody in the period crime drama series ‘Boardwalk Empire’. His performance in the series earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award along with other award nominations. In 2014, the actor was featured in three episodes of ‘Hannibal’.

In 2001, Michael Pitt gave his breakthrough film performance as the partner of a transgender rock star in the Tony Award-winning ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’. That year, he also played Donny Semenec in the psychological crime drama flick ‘Bully’. After this, he starred in Barbet Schroeder’s psychological thriller ‘Murder by Numbers’ alongside Sandra Bullock, Ryan Gosling and Ben Chaplin. In 2003, the actor featured in ‘The Dreamers’, a romantic drama that tells the story of a university student who, after meeting a brother and sister duo, becomes entangled in an erotic triangle. A year later, he had a role in the psychological thriller mystery drama ‘The Village’ which earned mixed reviews. Following a role in ‘Last Days’ (2005), Pitt got the opportunity to act in the romantic comedy ‘Delirious’ (2006), playing a young homeless guy who gets in touch with a celebrity photographer and falls for a pop singer.

During 2007, the American artiste did the movies ‘Funny Games’ and ‘Silk’. After this, he appeared in the dark comedy crime flick ‘Seven Psychopaths’, directed and written by Martin McDonagh. He next played Tommy Uva in the comedic crime drama ‘Rob the Mob’ in 2014. That year, Pitt also starred in ‘I Origins’ as a biologist in search of the facts about the origins of the eye. In 2012, Michael Pitt became the face of the renowned Italian fashion house Prada. He was featured in two Rag & Bone campaigns—once in Fall/Winter 2013 with actress Léa Seydoux and the other in Fall/Winter 2014 with actress Winona Ryder.

Pitt sang and played the guitar in a band named Pagoda. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2007. He also performed "Hey Joe" for ‘The Dreamers’ soundtrack. Pitt has also directed numerous music videos for Pagoda.
