Mariya was born Mariya Vladimirovna Putina, on April 28, 1985, in Leningrad, the Soviet Union. She grew up with her younger sister, Yekaterina Putina. Yekaterina was born in Germany. She is an acrobatic dancer and the director of two initiatives at the 'Moscow State University.' Mariya is affectionately called "Masha" by her friends and family. In 1996, Mariya’s family moved to Moscow. She attended German-language secondary schools located in Troparyovo-Nikulino, Moscow, Russia. Reportedly, she was taken out of school after Putin became the president. Mariya and her sister were both homeschooled then.
Mariya attended the ‘Fundamental Medicine’ department of the ‘Moscow State University’ from 2006 to 2011. She was enrolled at the university under the pseudonym “Vorontsov” to keep her high-profile identity a secret. Mariya also holds a degree in international economics from 'St. Petersburg State University.' She is also said to have graduated from the ‘State Linguistic University.’

Mariya reportedly got married to her Dutch boyfriend, Jorrit Faassen, and has a daughter, too. The daughter’s identity is yet to be revealed. Jorrit has served as an executive at 'Gazprom,' the Russian state-controlled gas company partially owned by Vladimir Putin. The couple now lives in Voorschoten, an upscale village in the province of South Holland.
Mariya owned a penthouse in the Crimean district in Voorschoten, which was sold for around $3 million in 2017. The penthouse was once chosen as the venue of an anti-Putin demonstration.
The mayor of the Dutch city of Hilversum, Pieter Broertjes, once proposed in a radio interview that Mariya should be deported from the Netherlands. The announcement was made after a tragic bombing of the 'Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17,' which was flying over the battlefields of eastern Ukraine. The blast killed all 298 people aboard. The Netherlands and Australia formerly blamed the Russian government for the blast. Mariya was in the Netherlands then. Her presence in the mourning nation triggered outrage among people. Some citizens of the country even protested outside Mariya’s residence.
Putin rarely speaks about his family to the media. However, in 2015, Putin acknowledged his daughters and said that Mariya and Yekaterina had made him proud.
