Maggie Carey is an American actress, screenwriter, director and producer. Her most well-known work is in the film ‘The To Do List’ that she wrote and directed. The filmmaker is also known for her documentaries and short films. The talented actress and writer has directed episodes of several super hit primetime television comedy series, including ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, ‘Silicon Valley’, ‘Single Parents’, and more. Born and raised far away from the Hollywood lights, she was a straight-A student throughout her high school and university years. She started her career doing stage comedy and progressed to other mediums like film and television. While her husband is known for his onscreen talents, she is a powerhouse behind the camera, as a director, producer and most importantly, as a writer. The husband-wife duo has worked together on many projects. She continues to follow her passion in show business as part of many outstanding projects.

Career
After attaining a degree in film production, Carey moved to New York and started her career in comedy by joining the ‘Upright Citizens Brigade Theater’ in Chelsea, New York. She would do improvisation, sketches and other comedy routines at the theatre. She was also part of the ‘Improv Olympics West’ in Los Angeles. Very soon, she became a popular and regular performer at the theatre. She soon graduated to other entertainment media and in 2001, she made her acting debut as the character ‘Brenda Gibson’ in the film ‘Occam’s Razor: The Great Dialogues of Mindy’. In the same year, she also co-wrote and co-directed the ‘SXSW Audience Award’ winning documentary film ‘Ladyporn’. Thereafter, in 2002, she wrote and directed a critically acclaimed PBS documentary titled ‘Sun River Homestead’ and another short film ‘Dance Club’. She continued working in Hollywood as a writer and director for the next few years.
In 2007, along with fellow comedy writer and actress, Liz Cackowski, she developed an online comedy TV series ‘The Jeannie Tate Show’ which chronicled the life of a busy woman who juggled the tasks of hosting a talk show from her minivan, running errands and taking care of her kids. The show won a lot of acclaim and was featured in ‘New York Magazine’s’ ‘Top 20 Web Series’ list. It was also picked up by HBO to be transformed into a television show. The same year, she was also part of the short film ‘Suburban Bravery’.
In 2009, she co-wrote an episode of the sitcom ‘In the Motherhood’. In 2011, she was part of the HBO comedy series ‘Funny or Die Presents’ as a co-writer and director of four episodes titled ‘Lady Refs’. The episodes revolved around the life of female referees of youth soccer games.
In 2013, she was the screenwriter and director of the semi-autobiographical film ‘The To Do List’, which centered around a fresh high school graduate’s comical attempts at gaining sexual experience before joining college. The film was originally titled ‘The Hand Job’ and was rejected by many production houses. But it was named in the ‘Black List’, which features select unproduced screenplays from Hollywood. She also acted in two episodes of the TV show ‘Rejected Pitches’ in that year.
In 2014-16, she wrote for popular comedy television series like ‘Silicon Valley’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’. From 2018-till date, her most recent ventures as a writer, director and/or producer have been in primetime television comedy series like ‘The Last Man on Earth’, ‘Great News’, ‘A.P. Bio’, ‘Barry’, ‘Champions’, ‘I Feel Bad’, ‘Single Parents’ and ‘Splitting Up Together’.

Maggie Carey was born in Boise, Idaho, USA, in the year 1975. While not much is known about her parents or siblings, she is said to have spent much of her formative years in Boise, where she attended ‘Jackson Elementary School’ and ‘West Junior High School’. A very dedicated and bright student, she graduated from ‘Borah High School’ in 1993, where she also played soccer and was part of the student council too. Her experience as a lifeguard at the local community pool was featured in her film ‘The To Do List’. She earned a degree in English Literature from the ‘University of Montana’, where was also the co-captain the school’s soccer team. She gained another degree, MFA in Film Production, from the ‘University of Texas - Austin’.
Shortly after meeting the actor, Bill Hader, through a mutual friend in Los Angeles, she married him in 2006. But after an eleven-year marriage and a five-month separation, the couple got divorced in March 2018. She has three daughters, Hannah Kathryn, Harper, Hayley Clementine, with her ex-husband. She has worked with her husband on many projects, including TV comedy series ‘Funny or Die Presents’ and films like ‘Cinema Six’ and ‘The To Do List.’
She is a very private person and is not active on any social media websites. She lives in Los Angeles, California, USA.
