Greg Proops is a multi-talented personality; he is an actor and comedian. His diverse portfolio includes stand-up comedy, improvisational comedy, voice-overs, hosting television shows, writing books and running a successful podcast. In a interview with an entertainment website, he mentioned that getting cast in the U.K. version of the hit comedy show ‘Whose Line is it Anyway’ was the luckiest thing to happen in his entire career. The show helped him showcase his ability as an improv comedian and gain popularity early on in his career. As a voice artist, he lent his voice to characters in famous shows and films including the cartoon character Bob in the animated show ‘Bob The Builder’. The stand-up comedian turned to writing and released a non-fiction book named ‘The Smartest Book in the World’ and runs a podcast by the name ‘The Smartest Man in the World’. The ‘Rolling Stone Magazine’ appropriately reviewed his podcasts as “the boldest comedy on the podcasting frontier right now.” At present, he appears as Mr. Granger, the art teacher in the new sitcom ‘Schooled.’

Childhood & Early Life
Greg Proops was born on October 3, 1959, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Steven and Doris Proops. He grew up in San Carlos, a suburb in southern San Francisco, California and studied at ‘San Mateo Junior College.’
In the late 1970s, he studied acting and improvisation at the San Francisco State University.
In 1982, he did his first stand-up routine with Forrest Brakeman at the ‘Holy City Zoo’ and later performed at a number of small clubs. The duo went by the name ‘Proops and Brakeman.’
After volunteering for the improv group Faultline on a whim, he was invited by the ringleader Reed Kirk to join the group. The group helped him learn improv and gave him the opportunity to perform at the famous Savoy Tivoli, located at Grant Avenue.

Career
Producers Mark Leveson and Dan Patterson were impressed by Greg Proops and Mc Shane, also a member of Faultline, and cast them on their improvisational comedy show ‘Whose Line is it Anyway’. Greg Proops stayed in London for four years to shoot for the show and became close friends with Colin Mochrie, Richard Vranch and McShane.
After staying in London for four years, he returned to the U.S. when his work permit expired. He was then cast in the American version of ‘Whose Line is it Anyway’ and has since appeared in 71 episodes of the show; frequently featured as a fourth contestant.
In 2004, the ‘Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show’ featured him in every episode of the short-lived improv comedy show. Here, performers played improv games in the backdrop of a green screen. Later, animators would edit the green screen with props and background.
He has hosted four popular game shows in his career: Space Cadets in the mid-1990s, VS. in 1999, RendezView in 2001, and Head Games in 2009.
As a voice actor, he has done voice-over in many popular films and television series. He voiced Tim Burton in the 1993 released ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,’ and Bernard, a FUGG technician in ‘Stripperella,’ a 2003-2004 adult animated series on Spike TV.
He also did the voice-over for the character of Fode in ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ and for Bob in the popular cartoon show ‘Bob the Builder.’ In 2005, he did voice acting in ‘Flight of the Conchords,’ a series run by BBC Radio 2.
He reprised his role in the video game versions of the Star Wars franchise in ‘Star-Wars: Episode 1- Racer’ and ‘Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace.’ Proops also guest-starred as Tal Merrick in the computer-animated series ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars” in 2008
He began his podcasting career with ‘The Greg Proops Experiment’ and now hosts a weekly podcast by the name ‘The Smartest Man in the World.’ Here, he chats about an array of topics related to his personal life and current events.
He has released eight comedy albums, the first in 1994 under the title ‘Live’ and the latest in 2018 called ‘The Resistance.’
His book ‘The Smartest Book in the World,’ published and released by Touchstone on May 5, 2015, is a compendium of short essays-of-sort, providing informative pieces about baseball, history, poetry and books with wit and comedy.

Greg Proops met Jennifer Canaga at a comedy show and after dating extensively, the duo married on 14 February 1990. The couple is childless and currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
