Rise to Fame
Finn Wittrock started auditioning for film and TV roles right after graduating from high school. After struggling for a year, he appeared in guest roles on television shows like 'Cold Case' and 'ER' in 2003. In the following year, he appeared in the police procedural series 'CSI: Miami' and the Disney Channel Original Movie 'Halloweentown High'. He regularly appeared on stage while training in performing arts at ‘The Juilliard School’. Following his graduation, he portrayed Romeo in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production of 'Romeo and Juliet' and Eugene Marchbanks in 'Candida' at the Berkshire Theatre Festival (2008).
In 2009, Wittrock returned to television as a regular cast member for the soap opera 'All My Children', in which he played Damon Miller until 2011. During this time, he appeared in Off-Broadway productions of 'The Age of Iron' and 'The Illusion'. His performance in the latter earned him a ticket to Broadway, and he went on to star in the revival of Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman' by Mike Nichols in 2012. He won multiple awards for his portrayal of Harold "Happy" Loman in this play. Meanwhile, he continued to appear on several television shows and had a recurring role on the period drama series 'Masters of Sex'. His film credits during this time included 'Winter's Tale', 'Noah' and 'Unbroken', all of which released in 2014. However, the talented actor got his big break when he was cast as Dandy Mott on the anthology series 'American Horror Story: Freak Show', for which he received a 'Primetime Emmy Award' nomination.
From 2015 to 2016, Wittrock starred in two more seasons of the 'American Horror Story' series, subtitled 'Hotel' and 'Roanoke'. In 2015, he played the starring role of college football player Freddie Steinmark in the biographical sports drama film 'My All American'. In the same year, he was also the lead cast in the drama film 'The Submarine Kid', for which he also co-wrote the screenplay. He then starred in the 2015 biographical comedy 'The Big Short'.
Wittrock appeared in a small role in the award-winning musical 'La La Land' in 2016. In recent years, he was seen in films, such as 'Landline' (2017) and 'A Futile and Stupid Gesture' (2018). He is set to appear as Mickey Deans in the upcoming biopic movie 'Judy'. On the television front, he portrayed murder victim Jeffrey Trail on 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story' in 2018, earning his second 'Emmy' nomination. His recent stage credits include Sam Gold-directed productions of 'Othello' at the New York Theatre Workshop and 'The Glass Menagerie' at Broadway.
