One of the main qualities of Attorney Barry Scheck is that he never shies away from handling high-profile cases and tackles them honestly and wisely. While his association with the Simpson team tarnished his reputation to a certain extent, most of his career has been dedicated to the pursuit of valuable causes, including serving those who need it the most. After completing his legal education, Barry Scheck spent five years in the Bronx, where he served as a Legal Aid Society attorney. He received a big break when he was given a clinical law professor position at the New York’s Cardozo School of Law. This position also allowed him enough freedom to pursue what was important to him.
In 1987, Scheck served as the lawyer for the famous Hedda Nussbaum case. The attorney defended her as well as assisted in getting the charges against her dropped. He also ensured Joel Steinberg's arrest in the case ‘Nussbaum vs. Steinberg’. After becoming a part of the O. J. Simpson defense team and defending him in the 1995 trail, Scheck went on to become the lead lawyer in the British au pair Louise Woodward case and defender her in the murder trial.
He was also responsible for clearing John Kogut, Dennis Halstead, and John Restivo who were charged of rape and murder of Theresa Fusco in 1985. Scheck proved them innocent after the DNA reports came negative.
Scheck served as the president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2004–05. Today, he is a professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is also the director at Center for the Study of Law & Ethics as well as of Clinical Education for the Trial Advocacy Program.
