Tara Whiteman originally got recognition on social media as a designer making fashion sketches while she was pursuing a design course at UNSW Australia. Her Instagram profile was made to share her sketches and designs that she did during her time in university. In October 2014, she was featured on Joshua Dang's short documentary titled 'Tara Milk Tea', where she talked about her background in designing. She also revealed that her blog name, 'Tara Milk Tea', was a nickname a friend used to tease her with that stuck to her when she chose a user name for her online profiles. Some of her early posts were of her cartoonish fashion sketches, which she often combined with the original pictures of her wearing the clothes for comparison, which became very popular with her fans who started to make requests to her to sketch their images as well. She also posted on anything that she liked, such as flowers, food, and snaps from travel trips.

In 2014, she won two overseas trips to London and Paris as part of design competitions, which she turned into fun trips with a little bit of effort and shared vividly colorful pictures with her fans. Tara Whiteman developed her passion for travelling early on in her life when she got the opportunity to explore Asia while visiting her mother's side of the family. Like travelling, her interest in photography was also fuelled early after she received her first camera at the age of 12. Since then, she became obsessed with taking photos of everything and everyone around her. Initially, both travel and photography were hobbies supported by the other jobs she held. Her first job was working in retail at the age of 15, and following school graduation, she took various jobs in admin, marketing and PR roles related to her degree. After completing high school, she began travelling the world with her friends with the savings she had secured. While pursuing her design degree, she got several opportunities to "work with companies on photographic projects, from tourism to fashion to food clients." Being able to travel the world and share photographs as a job has been a dream-come-true for her.

Tara Whiteman was born on August 19, 1994 in Sydney, Australia to a Singaporean mother and an Australian father. Her father worked as a ship captain and stayed away for months. She has an older sister. As a child, she and her family travelled overseas every few years to visit her mother's family in Asia. Her mother and sister were very good in drawing, which inspired her to sketch, and she later shifted to knitting and sewing for some time. After completing her school graduation from Ryde Secondary College in 2012, she decided to take a Design course at The University of New South Wales in Australia (2013-17), where she learnt digital designing skills.

Tara Whiteman is in a relationship with a man named Damian and often travels with her partner, who is also enthusiastic about photography. They help each other in taking pictures. However, while she sometimes mentions him in her posts, pictures of them together are scarce on social media. She once told 'Daily Mail Australia' that the pair often leaves their accommodation for a day without a camera or phones to enjoy every moment without the nagging of technology.
