Sebastian Arcelus initially appeared in several theatre works such as `Rent`, `Good Vibrations` `Wicked` and `Temptation`. He made his television debut in a minor role in the sci-fi crime drama `Person of Interest’ in 2011. He made his feature film debut the next year in the drama film `The Last Day of August`. He was also involved in the film`s production.

Between 2013 and 2016, he played one of the supporting roles in the Netflix original TV series `House of Cards`. The series, created by Beau Willimon, has earned 33 Emmy nominations, as well as eight Golden Globe nominations. Arcelus played a journalist named Lucas Goodwin, an editor for `The Washington Herald`.

In 2014, he had a significant role in the romantic drama film `The Best of Me`. The film was directed by Michael Hoffman. The film was a commercial success, earning over $ 35 million on a budget of $ 26 million. It received mostly negative reviews from critics. The same year, he appeared in the TV miniseries `It Could Be Worse`, as well as a guest role in the supernatural mystery series `The Leftovers`. Between 2014 and 2019, he played Jay Whitman, one of the supporting characters in the political drama `Madam Secretary`. The story revolved around a man who suffered from multiple personality disorder and had 23 different personalities. He kidnaps three teenage girls, and keeps them locked in an isolated underground facility. The film was made on a budget of just $ 9 million, and it was a huge success, earning over $ 270 million. The film was praised by most critics. It won a few awards as well.

In 2018, he played a guest role in the drama series `The Deuce’. In 2019, he played guest roles in two TV shows, `FBI` & `Bull’.

He has also played voice roles in few animated shows and films such as `Shrine of the Morning Mist`, `Ultimate Muscle` and `Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys`.
