Patrick Bamford is an English football player who currently plays as a striker for the Leeds United club. Bamford’s initiation into football happened very early in life when he started training from the age of eight. He made his debut in the club football scene at the age of eighteen. He started his professional football career with Chelsea. While with the club, he played on loan for other Premier League clubs. After five years with Chelsea, Bamford went on to play for Middlesbrough.  In a years time, he was signed up by Leeds United. In this team, he started playing as lone striker and thrived under the team coach’s guidance. Patrick Bamford’s growth as a player has lead people to speculate on his inclusion in the English team.  Due to his Irish descent, he is eligible to play for Ireland. Though there has been interest shown from the Irish team to include him, Bamford has stayed on with Leeds United to help them get back into the Premier League. He holds the distinction for the highest delivery of assists for his position in the Premier League.

Childhood & Early Life

Patrick Bamford was born on September 5, 1993, in Grantham, Lincolnshire. His father Russell Bamford was an architect. He has two sisters.

He started playing football at an early age and played junior football for the Muskham Cougars. When he was eight, he joined the Nottingham Forest’s Academy.

Patrick Bamford went to school at the Nottingham High School. Here, he played in the rugby union as the school did not have a football team.

Bamford was a bright student and appeared for the GCSE exams one year early.  He scored five A*s, three As and two Bs.

For his A levels he chose to study French, history, biology and general studies and got three Bs and a C.

To make sure that he had other options apart from football, Bamford applied to various universities and Harvard was one of them. He got accepted and was also offered a fellowship from Harvard. However, Bamford declined the offer and chose to focus on his football career.

Career

Patrick Bamford made his football career debut on 31 December 2011. His team, Nottingham Forest was playing against Cardiff City and he was bought for the last 12 minutes of the game as a substitute.

Bamford signed a five-year contract for 1.5 million pounds with Chelsea on January 31, 2012, and a month later his training with Chelsea’s first-team squad started.

While part of the Chelsea club, Patrick Bamford was given on loan to various other clubs starting with Milton Keynes Dons.  On March 19, 2013, he scored the first goal as a professional player while playing with the MK Dons.

In January 2014, Bamford was given on loan to Derby County. He was in great form during the season and by the end of the season he had netted 25 goals while playing for Derby County.

In August 2014, Bamford was loaned to Middlesbrough. He had an impressive stint with them and emerged as the highest scorer of the team for the season with 19 goals.

In July 2015, Bamford was taken on loan by Crystal Palace. However, he was unhappy with the opportunities that he was getting as a player in the team and returned to Chelsea the same year in December.

In January 2016, Bamford went to Norwich City on loan. The same year in March he debuted as a Premier League player against Manchester city.

On August 30, 2016 he joined Burnley on loan. Here he made six Premier League appearances.  Due to personality differences with Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, Bamford was called back to Chelsea before his loan duration was over.

He joined Middlesbrough on 18 January 2017. He had a four-and-a-half-year contract for approximately £ 5.5 million. His first goal in the Premier League was scored on May 13, 2017, against Southampton.

In February 2018, Patrick Bamford was moved to a lone striker position by manager Tony Pulls, after Rudy Gestede, the lone striker had an injury. Bamford flourished in this role. He continued to play as lone striker during the EFL Championships 2017-18.

On 2nd March 2018, Bamford scored a hattrick against Leeds United. This was his first hattrick. In all, during the 2017-18 championship season Bamford made 44 match appearances and scored 13 goals.

Patrick Bamford joined Leeds United for four years on July 31, 2018. The contract amount was undisclosed but it was estimated to be around £7 million excluding bonuses. With this contract, he became one of the most expensive players for Leeds.

The 2018-19 season proved to be a difficult one for Bamford. He had two ligament injuries, one while playing a match against Bristol City and another while training. He had to stay off the field for several months. This season he played 25 games and hit 10 goals.

On April 30, 2019, Patrick Bamford was given a two-match ban by the Football Association for deception. During a match against Aston Villa, he pretended to be hit by Anwar El Ghazi and fell to the ground clutching his face. Replays later showed that there had been no contact between the players.

During the 2019-20 season, Bamford scored four goals from five Championship games and was nominated for the EFL Championships PFA player of the month for August 2019.

The 2019-20 season was paused in March due to Covid-19 and resumed in June 2019.  Bamford scored 16 goals during this season and became the top scorer for Leeds United. His score helped the team win the EFL Championship division title and return to the Premier League after 16 years.

On February 8, 2021, Bamford scored his 100th goal as a professional football player against Crystal Palace. In total, he scored 17 goals during this season. Coach Marcelo(2) Biesla made Bamford start almost all the games of this season.

There have been talks that Patrick Bamford might play for Ireland internationally. He has earlier played for Ireland in the under-18 team. His eligibility comes from the fact that his maternal grandparents were Irish.

In 2014-15 when Patrick Bamford was playing for Middlesbrough he was named Champion Player of the Year by the Football League Awards.

Patrick Bamford is a polyglot and can speak French, German and Spanish. He can also play many musical instruments such as the violin, saxophone, piano and guitar.
