Moon Unit Zappa is an American actress and the eldest child of the legendary musician Frank Vincent Zappa and his second wife Gail Zappa. It is fair to say Zappa became popular mainly because of her family background, more due to her father’s fame. At the age of fourteen, Moon Zappa appeared in one of Frank Zappa’s music videos, ‘Valley Girl’, which became the biggest hit of the singer’s career. Frank Zappa’s fans spotted her for the first time in that video and soon she became a subject of interest among the fans. Zappa and her younger brother, Dweezil Zappa, who is a rock guitarist himself, appeared many times on MTV soon after Moon’s appearance in that video. Zappa is also known for her acting career. She has appeared mostly on television shows as a supporting actress after she made her debut in the early1980s. She has played small roles in TV shows like ‘CHiPs’ and ‘Fast Times’ and in films like ‘Love Always’.
Moon Zappa appeared on the screen for the first time when her father Frank Zappa decided to cast her in one of his music videos. She appeared in the song ‘Valley Girl’ from her father’s 1982 music album ‘Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch.’ This made her a public figure. The music video became a huge hit and featured at number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.
Zappa appeared in her brother’s debut single, ‘My Mother Is a Space Cadet’, which she helped write as well. Soon, the siblings found popularity which brought them television offers and they appeared on MTV many times throughout the 1980s.
Zappa made her first appearance on television with a role in the series ‘CHiPs’ in 1982. A year later, she made her debut on the silver screen with a role in the horror film ‘Nightmares’. After Frank Zappa’s death, Gail Zappa founded a trust to control the business related to Frank Zappa’s merchandises and music. Interestingly, after Gail Zappa passed away on October 7, 2015, the control of the trust went to the younger siblings, Ahmet Zappaand Diva Zappa, with both getting 30 percent of the shares. Moon and Dweezil Zappa were given only 20 percent of the shares each, which was quite shocking to both of them. It was also revealed that the two elder siblings would not get any money from the trust until it is profitable and would need permission from their younger siblings to make money from their father’s legacy.
