Mario Gotze is a German professional footballer who plays for the sports club Borussia Dortmund and the Germany national team as an attacking midfielder. He is known for his speed, technique, and dribbling. He has been named one of Germany’s best talents by Mathias Summer, a former technical director of German Football Association. Born in Memmingen, Germany, he began playing football at the age of eight when he entered Dortmund’s youth academy. He eventually made his debut for Bundesliga, when he was around seventeen. He was promoted to the first team during the 2009-2010 Bundesliga season. Later, he signed with the club Borussia Dortmund, and has proved to be a very valuable asset of the team. He is also a part of the German national football team, having first been selected in 2010. He played for the team in the UEFA Euro 2012, and two years later, he played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and helped Germany win the tournament by scoring the winning goal in the final match of the World Cup, during the extra time. He has earned several honors, such as the ‘Bundesliga Young Player of the Year’ and the ‘Tuttosport Golden Boy’ in 2011, and the award for ‘Goal of the Year’ in 2014.

Club Career
Mario Gotze made his debut for Bundesliga in November 2009. He entered the match as a substitute for Jakub Błaszczykowski. Later during the 2009-10 season, he was promoted to the first team. He proved his efficiency as a player during the 2010-11 season and finished the season with eight goals and eleven assists.
He later played in the 2011 German Super Cup, but eventually lost to Schalke 04. The next year, he was unfortunately diagnosed with a hip injury as a cartilage in his hip became inflamed under stress. In March 2012, he signed a new contract with the Borussia Dortmund.
Gotze appeared in his first match for the team when he appeared as a substitute against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Along with Borussia Dortmund, he won the Bundesliga in 2012, setting a record by earning the most points in a season with 81. During the 2012-13 season, he came as a substitute during a match against Werder Bremen and scored the winning goal. In a later match against Hannover 96, he scored a hat-trick, helping his team achieve a 5-1 victory.
In 2013, he was transferred to Bayern Munich, after the team had triggered his release clause of 37 million euros. This transfer made him the most expensive German player of all time. He scored his first goal for Bayern in a match against Viktoria Plzeň at the Champions League group stage, helping his team reach a 5-0 win. He finished the season with 15 goals and 14 assists in total.
His performance in his second season with the team improved as he ended the season with 15 goals in 48 appearances. In the beginning of the 2015-16 season, he struggled to make an impact in the team; however, his performance improved later. He scored the second goal in the 2015-16 Champions League, and helped his team achieve a 0-3 win against Olympiacos. Later, during the 2016-17 season, he confirmed that he was returning to Borussia Dortmund on a four-year contract.
In September 2016, he lost his first match upon return against the RB Leipzig; he was still praised for his return to the team. He finished the season with two goals in sixteen appearances. During the 2017-18 season, his performance declined, but still he managed to score two goals in 32 appearances.
International Career
Mario Gotze made his debut for the German international team in November 2010. His first match against Sweden resulted in a goalless draw. He made his second appearance for the national team in a friendly match against Italy in February 2011. His first goal for the national team was scored in a match against Brazil in August. This made him the youngest goal-scorer for Germany.
He made his tournament debut in UEFA Euro 2012, after he entered as a substitute against Greece. During the 2014 World Cup qualification, he scored four goals, and his name was entered in Germany’s squad for the tournament finals. During the second match in the tournament, he scored the opening goal in a match against Ghana, which led to him being named the ‘Man of the Match’.
During the World Cup final match against Argentina, he came as a substitute and scored the winning goal, helping his team win the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was named the ‘Man of the Match,’ and he also became the first substitute player in history to score a World Cup winning goal.
