Rise to Fame
Kyle Giersdorf began playing video games when he was three years old. As he grew up, gaming became a prevalent part of his life. In 2017, North Carolina-based software development company Epic Games released Fortnite. Three versions of the game have been published to date: ‘Fortnite: Save the World’, ‘Fortnite Battle Royale’, and ‘Fortnite Creative’. While all three versions have been quite profitable for Epic Games, it was the success of ‘Fortnite Battle Royal’ that has turned the company into a major player in the industry. The incredibly immersive and addictive game has quickly become a global phenomenon and attracted hundreds of millions of players from all over the world.
When Kyle Giersdorf initially began playing Fortnite, his parents did not understand it, and like any other parents, advised him against too much gaming. However, their opinion has changed since then, and they are now completely supportive of Kyle’s choices.
Kyle Giersdorf is quite active on social media. Not long after he started playing Fortnite, he began streaming his gameplay on his Bugha Twitch account, on which he has accumulated over 170 thousand followers to date. On June 20, 2015, Kyle Giersdorf set up his YouTube channel. He posted his first video, titled ‘Day’, on August 2, 2018. His content is exclusively Fortnite-related. As of 2019, he has garnered over 200 thousand subscribers and more than two million total views. He is also very popular on Instagram and Twitter.
As a professional Fortnite player, Kyle Giersdorf is part of the Sentinel e-sports organization. Previously known as Phoenix1 in the League of Legends scene, Sentinel formed their Fortnite division on July 12, 2018. Kyle Giersdorf joined the organization on March 25, 2019. Besides him, the team is comprised of Owen Wright (Animal), Cayden Bradford (Carose), and Nick McGuire (Aspect).
In April 2019, Kyle Giersdorf took part in the Epic Games' World Cup Warmup before he and his team competed in the first iteration of the Fortnite World Cup. Hosted online and offline between April and July, the tournament had a $40 million (some sources say $30 million) prize pool. Kyle Giersdorf and his teammates participated in solo and duo events. On 2 June 2019, he won $800 with Carose at the WC 2019 NAE Qualifiers - Week 8. As a solo player, during game one of the World Cup, he registered nine eliminations and earned the Victory Royale. On July 28, 2019, the solo event finals were hosted at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York, the longtime home of the US Open. Recording 59 points against the first runner up Harrison Chang’s (Psalm) 33 points, Kyle Giersdorf won the solo event.
The large prize pool had already drawn mainstream media attention to the tournament. The fact that a 16-year-old has become one of the champions has led them to speculate on the longevity of Fortnite and e-sports in general. Several articles have been written on him and he has made an appearance on NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. When he was asked what he wanted to do with his winnings, he said that he wishes to save it. “All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy,” he told the BBC.
In July 2019, he won the Trio Cash Cup 2 – NAE with Aspect and Animal.
