Career
In 1966, Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan. Karla LaVey was the cofounder and one of its main representatives. In 1970, she featured in two documentaries that take a look into the world of Satanism. The first one was titled ‘Satanis: The Devil’s Mass.’ It is a documentary that explores the Church of Satan and its founder, Anton LaVey. The other documentary was ‘Witchcraft 70’ that gave a detailed exploration of satanic rituals from around the world. In 1993, another documentary was released, ‘Speak of the Devil: The Canon of Anton LaVey.’ As the name suggests, this documentary was also about the Church of Satan and its founder.
In 1979, Karla LaVey was assigned the task of overseeing the International Church of Satan headquarters in Amsterdam. In recognition of all the work that she had done to promote the Church of Satan, she was given the title of high priestess in the late 1970s. The 1980s and 1990s saw her promoting the church on every possible forum. She appeared on ‘Joan Rivers Show,’ ‘60 Minutes,’ ‘20/20,’ and ‘Ron Reagan Show’ to dispel all the misinformation and prejudices about Satanism.
Her role in the Church of Satan came under threat after the death of her father in 1997. At that time, it was agreed that Karla LaVey and Blanche Barton—the partner of Anton and the mother of his only son—would have equal roles in running the Church of Satan. However, this changed when Blanche Barton claimed that Anton LaVey had left all his possessions to her. Barton produced a will that transferred the ownership of all his belongings, writings, and royalties to Blanche. The will was contested by Karla and the court ruled that the will was invalid. The court divided his property amongst his three children and gave Blanche Barton the ownership of the Church of Satan.
After the Church of Satan went under the control of Blanche Barton, Karla decided to form her own church. On October 31, 1999, Karla LaVey founded the First Satanic Church with its headquarters in San Francisco. Her aim is to further spread the teachings of her father. The church follows the Satanic Bible and its members are required to read all the books written by Anton LaVey. The church is not open to everyone. People applying for membership have to go through a very detailed membership process.
At present, the First Satanic Church supports ‘The 600 Club,’ which is an internet forum that aims to encourage conversations amongst Satanists and to counter false propaganda against the First Satanic Church and Satanism in general. The church also hosts a lot of shows to promote Satanism. Since 1998, LaVey has been holding the Black X-Mass Show every year in December; the show is open to the public. She also hosts a radio show called ‘The Voice of Satan.’ On the show, she talks about Satanism and plays music that she grew up listening to.
