Joseph Mawle is an English actor, who is known for his role as Benjen Stark in the TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Born in Oxford, England, Mawle studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He initially appeared in theatrical works, and his first major role was seen in `Troilus and Cressida’, playing the titular character of Troilus. He also appeared in television films such as `Soundproof’, and `Dunkirk’. He was also later seen on the big screen in feature films such as ‘Made in Dagenham’ and ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.’ He earned popularity for starring in ‘Game of Thrones,’ a popular British fantasy drama series, that has gained a cult status worldwide. Other TV shows he is known for include `Troy: Fall of a City’, in which he played Odysseus, a main character.

Career

After Joseph Mawle finished his graduation, he made appearances in several plays such as `Troilus and Cressida’, `Hamlet’, and `Antony and Cleopatra’. His first important role on television was seen in the 2004 television film `Dunkirk’. The film was about the famous Battle of Dunkirk and the Dunkirk evacuation that took place during World War II. In 2006, he had a leading role in the drama TV film `Soundproof’. He continued to appear in several other TV films such as `Persuasion’, in 2007, ‘Clapham Junction’ in 2007, and ‘Freefall’ in 2009.

In 2009, he had an important role in the British horror film `Heartless’, his first work on the big screen. The film was directed by Philip Ridley. The film received several awards, but was a huge failure at the box office, earning just $ 20,000 on a budget of $ 5 million. His next work on the big screen was seen in the 2010 British film ‘Made in Dagenham’. In 2011, he had a recurring role in the TV series `Game of Thrones`, a British fantasy drama that went on to earn international popularity. The show aired for seven seasons between 2011 and 2019 and gained a lot of appreciation from fans and critics. It received numerous awards as well. Mawle played a character named Benjen Stark, in the first, sixth, and seventh seasons.

In 2012, he appeared in a supporting role in the action thriller film `The Cold Light of Day`. The film was a commercial and critical failure. He was next seen in the dark fantasy action horror film `Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter`, which was based on a novel of the same name released in 2010. The film is a fictional story about the 16th American President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who is shown to have a secret identity as a vampire hunter. The same year, he also appeared in the Scottish drama film `Shell’ as well as in the two-part TV drama `Birdsong’. Few other films he appeared in include `Half of a Yellow Sun’ (2013), and `In the Heart of the Sea’ (2015).

Meanwhile, he also continued to work in other TV shows as well, such as `Ripper Street’, where he played Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine, and `Troy: Fall of a City’, a miniseries based on the Trojan War, where he played Odysseus.

He portrayed the famous English novelist ‘George Orwell’ in the 2019 biographical film ‘Mr Jones’ directed by Agnieszka Holland. The film premiered at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival and was warmly received by critics. That same year, he also appeared in the British television series ‘MotherFatherSon.’

In 2022, he joined the cast of the American fantasy television series ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.’ He won over fans and critics with his portrayal of ‘Adar,’ a fallen Elf. However, he decided to leave the show after season 1.  He next starred in the Western drama series ‘1923’ where he made a guest appearance as ‘Captain Shipley.’

Family & Personal Life

Joseph Mawle was born on 21st March 1974, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. His father was a farmer, and his mother was a teacher. He was dyslexic from an early age, and so he attended a boarding school for special needs from the age of 13 to 16.

At the age of 16, he was inflicted with labyrinthitis, an inflammation of the inner ear that caused him to lose much of his hearing. He also got tinnitus because of the condition.

He graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2002, before he began his acting career. He is currently in a relationship. While not much is known about his lady love, through little information it was revealed that she is a psychologist and also works as a stylist at Dior in Sloane Street, London.
