Career
Jeanette worked as a teller while she was still in the college. In 1997, she was made part of the ‘Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders,’ a professional cheerleading squad of the ‘National Football League’ team named the ‘Miami Dolphins.’ Jeanette later featured in her cheerleading squad’s first swimsuit calendar before she left the team. One of her sisters, Adriana Dousdebes, was also a ‘Dolphins’ cheerleader.
Marriage to Marco
Jeanette was 17 when she first met Marco at a neighborhood party at the ‘West Miami Recreation Center.’ They both attended the same high school and were thus acquainted. They met again when Jeanette was a cheerleader. Shortly after that, they began dating each other. Their relationship was disturbed for a while when Marco enrolled at the ‘University of Florida.’
Jeanette and Marco dated for about 7 years before he proposed marriage to her. In 1997, on Valentine’s Day, Marco took Jeanette on a date to the observation deck of the ‘Empire State Building.’ Marco proposed to her on top of the deck, mirroring one of the iconic scenes of the 1993 movie ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ which is Jeanette’s all-time favorite.
In 1998, Jeanette and Marco got married. The wedding took place at the ‘Church of the Little Flower’ in Coral Gables, Florida. They are blessed with four children: Daniella, Amanda, Dominick, and Anthony.
Following her marriage to Marco, Jeanette joined the ‘International Fine Arts College’ to study fashion design. Unfortunately, she got pregnant before the beginning of her last semester and had to leave the course incomplete.
Political Involvement
Jeanette is known as a camera-shy woman and as someone who hates any sort of political involvement. She hates politics so much so that she has skipped voting on several occasions. Instead, Jeanette has always wished for a normal life where she and her husband would take care of the household.
Nevertheless, being the wife of a politician, Jeanette has played a prominent role in Marco’s political career. When Marco was contesting for the post of the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Jeanette was enlisted to assist and manage the political action committee that oversaw Marco’s travel and campaign expenses. Unfortunately, Jeanette’s involvement created a lot of confusion regarding the related financial transactions. Marco later regretted his decision, as he had overlooked Jeanette’s lack of experience in handling such crucial matters.
Philanthropic Activities
Jeanette is a part-time employee of the Braman family’s charitable foundation, which had a pivotal role in managing the finances of Marco’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Jeanette also volunteers for ‘Kristi's House,’ an organization that offers assistance to victims of human trafficking.
Controversies
Since 1997, Marco and Jeanette have had around 17 traffic tickets raised against them. Of the 17 tickets, 13 have been against Jeanette, for violating traffic rules. The Rubio couple has been charged with speeding, driving through red lights, and driving carelessly on several occasions. Jeanette alone was penalized for speeding in 2009 and 2010 and was charged with careless driving in 2000. She once crashed into a ‘Porsche Panamera’ that belonged to one of Marco's donors, during the ‘Team Marco 2016 campaign.
Jeanette was hit by several questions by the media regarding her family's disordered finances. She also had to face questions about the ‘Florida Republican Party’ credit card that Marco had used for his personal expenses. As Jeanette was the manager of the finances of Marco’s Florida House Speaker campaign, she was largely held responsible for all the discrepancies in the financial statements that suggested that a large sum of money was spent on office and administrative costs.
On March 12, 2010, the ‘Miami Herald’ published an investigation report that revealed that Marco and Jeanette had failed to produce a valid financial statement of expenditures amounting to more than $34,000 made over an 18-month period. Todd Harris, the-then campaign advisor of Marco, blamed Jeanette for the discrepancy. Marco, on the other hand, had a diplomatic approach toward his wife. He did accept Jeanette’s incompetency in managing the campaign’s finances but also appreciated her contribution during his 2010 Republican Senate primary, against popular ‘Republican’ governor Charlie Crist. Marco acknowledged Jeanette’s support throughout the 2010 campaign and revealed how she had stopped him from withdrawing his candidature when he was down by 20 percentage points in the polls. Jeanette’s Colombian descent, too, had helped a lot in Marco’s political campaigns.
