Rise to Stardom
Gunna began his journey as a rapper at a very young age. Growing up in Atlanta, he was influenced by the hardships that his family had to face. He even got involved in taking drugs, but sorted himself out. This is when rap music came to his rescue. On June 16, 2013, Gunna released his first mixtape ‘Hard Body’. It featured some of his earliest hits, including “Hardbody”, “We Live This”, “Faded”, “I’m Not a Criminal”, and others. While these did not top any charts, his inherent talent caught the attention of hip-hop heavyweights. He was then introduced to rapper Young Thug by King Troup. This was a life-changing for him as Young Thug took him under his wing and signed him to ‘YSL Records’ in 2016. This led to his first collaboration as he was featured in Young Thug’s hit “Floyd Mayweather”.
His first mixtape under YSL Records, ‘Drip Season’ was released on October 14, 2016. Although it was not a chart-topper, there was no denying the gritty lyrics and rapping style of the young rapper. ‘Drip Season 2’ was released on May 11, 2017. This announced the debut of Gunna to the world. With songs like “Phase”, “Another Wave (Ft. Lil Duke & Shad da God)”, “Belly of the Beast”, “YSL (Ft. Playboi Carti)”, and “Beat the Case (Ft. Offset)”, etc. the mixtape was a massive hit. However, the success was almost nothing when compared to the success of his third mixtape ‘Drip Season 3’. The EP ‘Drip or Drown’ was first released on November 30, 2017, as a prelude to the album. It immediately generated attention.
‘Drip Season 3’ was finally released on February 2, 2018. The hard work he had put into the album turned it into his breakout mixtape. Each and every song in the album became massively popular. Some of Gunna’s best songs from the mixtape are “Helluva Price”, “Drippin”, “Almighty (Ft. Hoodrich Pablo Juan)”, “Car Sick (Ft. Metro Boomin & NAV)”, and “Drip or Drown (Remix) (Ft. Lil Yachty)”. He emulated the success with his fourth mixtape ‘Drip Harder’ (released October 5, 2018). The mixtape, in collaboration with Lil Baby, featured industry heavyweights like Drake, Young Thug, Lil Durk, and others. It was released after the single “Sold Out Dates” was leaked. Although the song did not feature in the album, it became one of their greatest hits. ‘Drip Harder’ also featured chart-toppers like “Drip Too Hard”, “Off White VLONE (Ft. Lil Durk & NAV)”, and “Never Recover” by Lil Baby, Gunna & Drake.
Continuing on his upward trajectory, Gunna released his debut studio album ‘Drip or Drown 2’ on February 22, 2019. The album was critically acclaimed. It also debuted at number 1, on the ‘Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart’. It is on its way to becoming his best-selling album to date. It showcases hits like “Outstanding”, “3 Headed Snake, Ft. Young Thug”, “Speed It Up”, and “Same Yung N---a, Ft. Playboi Carti”. Besides his success in the music industry, Gunna is also making waves in the world of fashion. His unique style of street fashion combined with high profile brands like ‘Off White’, ‘Dior’, ‘Gucci’, ‘Chanel’, ‘Pyer Moss’, etc, have made him a darling of the fashion world. He has not only walked the runway at ‘Paris Fashion Week’, but performed at ‘Paris Men’s Week’. He has also been regularly featured in articles by ‘Vogue’, ‘GQ’, etc.
