Christian Pulisic is a professional soccer player currently affiliated with Premier League club Chelsea and the United States national team. He plays as an attacking midfielder or winger. Son of parents who both played collegiate soccer at George Mason University, he had an inborn love for the sport. His parents traveled to different countries and he began playing for the youth team of Brackley Town when he was seven. He then played for Michigan Rush in the mid-2000s. He proceeded to play for the local US Soccer Development Academy club PA Classics, and by now, he had decided to pursue his passion professionally. As a 16-year-old, he began his professional career at the German club Borussia Dortmund, as a member of their U17 squad. After a successful stint, he was promoted to the senior team the following year. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most popular soccer players in the world. His fans fondly call him “Captain America.” However, his brilliant career hasn’t been without any hiccups. He suffered injuries in 2019 and 2020 and had to take a break. He eventually resumed his career and scored his first international hat-trick for the US men’s national team in 2022.

Childhood & Early Life

Christian Pulisic was born on September 18, 1998, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the United States, to Kelley and Mark Pulisic. Both his parents had played collegiate soccer at George Mason University, and he inherited their love for the sport. Mark later became a coach.

The young boy started playing soccer at an early age and idolized Portuguese footballer Luís Figo. His mother had to move to England for some time because of her career, and Christian accompanied her. He began playing for the Brackley Town youth team when he was seven.

In the mid-2000s, he lived in Michigan with his father and played for Michigan Rush. During this period, he went to Workman Elementary School.

His family eventually returned to Hershey, and Christian started playing for the local US Soccer Development Academy club PA Classics. He also trained with the local professional club Penn FC (then known as Harrisburg City Islanders). He was chosen for a five-day trial at Chelsea's Cobham base in 2010.

Club Career

In early 2015, when Christian Pulisic was 16, he was signed by the soccer club Borussia Dortmund. He first joined their U17 squad and later became a part of the U19. In just 15 games with the youth teams, he scored ten goals and assisted eight.

He then joined Borussia Dortmund’s first team and made his debut in January 2016. In February, he made his UEFA Europa League debut in a 2-0 victory against Porto. He also made his Bundesliga start the same month.

He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund in April 2016, in a 3–0 home win against Hamburg. With this goal, he became the youngest non-German player to score a goal in the Bundesliga. He was 17 years and 212 days old at that time.

He scored in stoppage time against Manchester City in the 2016 International Champions Cup friendly pre-season tournament. He scored his first goal of the season just one day before his 18th birthday.

On 8 March 2017, he first UEFA Champions League goal against Benfica in the round of 16. Dortmund won the match 4-0. Aged just 18 years, 5 months, and 18 days, he became Dortmund's youngest ever scorer in the competition.

Premier League Career

Christian Pulisic signed with Premier League club Chelsea in January 2019. His transfer fee was estimated to be £58 million, making him the most expensive American player.

He made his Premier League debut for Chelsea against Manchester United in August 2019. Chelsea lost the match. He scored his first goals for the team in October 2019 in a 4-2 win against Burnley. He scored a perfect hat trick in the match.

He scored his first Champions League goal for Chelsea in a match against Valencia in November 2019. The match was a 2–2 draw. He played in Chelsea's 2-1 win against Aston Villa in June 2020. He scored a goal in a 3-5 defeat to Liverpool in July.

Christian Pulisic scored the opening goal in the 2020 FA Cup Final against Arsenal in August. However, he sustained an injury during the game and had to be substituted. Chelsea ultimately lost the match.

In October 2020, he made his first Premier League start of the season in a 3-3 draw against Southampton. A few days later, he scored a 90th-minute goal in a 4-0 Champions League away win against Krasnodar.

He scored the opening goal in a 2-5 home league defeat to West Bromwich Albion in April 2021. In the same month, he scored a double against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, resulting in a 4-1 victory for his team. In May 2021, he won his first Champions League following Chelsea’s 1-0 win against Manchester City in the final at the Estádio do Dragão.

He scored the equalizer in an exciting 2-2 draw at home against Liverpool in January 2022. In February, he started the EFL Cup Final against Liverpool; Chelsea lost the match.

International Career

Christian Pulisic played for the United States national team at U15 and U17 levels. He scored a goal and an assist in three games as part of the U17 team at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He made his senior debut in a 4-0 win in a World Cup qualifying game against Guatemala in March 2016. In September 2016, he recorded two goals and an assist in a World Cup qualifying match against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The match resulted in a 6-0 victory for the US team.

He was made the captain of the US national team in 2018. At 20 years and 63 days old, he became the youngest player to captain the United States national team.

He captained the United States national team to a 3-2 victory in the CONCACAF Nations League final against Mexico in June 2021. He scored the winning goal by converting a penalty.

He scored his first international hat-trick for the US national team during a match with Panama in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.
