Phil, a TV weatherman at a local station in Pennsylvania is charming on screen, but off screen, he does not treat people nicely. However, his life takes a turn when, while covering an annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he gets caught in a time loop and ends up living the same day repeatedly.

Clark Grisworld decides to take his family on a cross-country car trip from Chicago to Southern California amusement park Walley World. The family have numerous adventures along the way including a falling out, the death of a family member, getting lost in the desert and Clark becoming infatuated with a beautiful woman driving a red Ferrari. 

Danny Noonan, a young caddy, intends to bag the prestigious caddy scholarship offered by the Bushwood Country Club. For this, he has to impress the arrogant Judge Elihu Smails, the co-owner of the club. Al Czervik, a loud construction tycoon wants to purchase the club and gets into a conflict with Smails. Meanwhile, the golf course ground keeper is troubled by a rampaging gopher.
