Tamzin Merchant is an English actress active in cinema, theater, and television. She was born in Sussex, England. She graduated from Homerton College, Cambridge, with a degree in education studies. Her first role on the big screen came in the 2005 romance film ‘Pride & Prejudice’, which was directed by Joe Wright. She played the supporting role of Georgiana Darcy. The film turned out to be a huge success commercially. It also went to the Oscars with four nominations. She has appeared in several TV shows, such as ‘The Tudors,’ a historical fiction TV series, where she played Catherine Howard in 2009 and 2010. She also had a main role in the American supernatural horror series ‘Salem’. She has appeared in plays like ‘The 24hr Plays’ and ‘Cigarettes and Chocolate’ as well. Other than her work in the entertainment industry, she is also a patron of the international development charity named ‘Build Africa’.
Career
Tamzin Merchant’s first role on the big screen was in the romance film ‘Pride & Prejudice’ in 2005. Directed by Joe Wright, the film was based on the well-known 1813 novel of the same name by Jane Austen. Made on a budget of around $40 million, the film managed to earn three times its budget. The same year, she also appeared in the TV film ‘My Family and Other Animals’, in a supporting role. In 2006, Merchant was seen in two more TV films which were ‘The Good Housekeeping Guide’ and ‘Casualty 1906’. In 2008, she had an important role in the film ‘Radio Cape Cod’, a film which was directed and produced by Andrew Silver. She played a teenage girl who has recently lost her father. While her mother meets someone new, she herself experiences her first love.
In 2009, she was seen in ‘Princess Kaiulani,’ a British-American biographical drama film which was based on a princess named Ka’iulani in the Kingdom of Hawai’i. The film was a huge failure commercially. The reviews from critics were mostly mixed. In 2009 and 2010, she also appeared in two seasons of ‘The Tudor’, a historical fiction series, where she played Catherine Howard. In 2011, she was seen in the romantic drama film ‘Jane Eyre’, which was directed by Cary Fukunaga. It was based on the 1847 novel of the same name by Charlotte Bronte. The film was met with mostly favorable reviews from critics, and it also won a few awards. In 2011, she was seen in the TV film ‘Red Faction: Origins’.
In 2012, she had a supporting role in ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’, a two-part TV film based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens. The ending has been adapted by Gwyneth Hughes. She also appeared in the film ‘Second Wind’ released the same year. In 2013, she appeared in another two-part TV film ‘Murder on the Home Front’. It was directed by Geoffrey Sax. In 2014, she was seen in the adventure film ‘Copenhagen’, which was directed by Mark Raso. The same year, she also appeared in the supernatural horror TV series ‘Salem’. The series aired till 2017 for three seasons. Merchant earned a nomination for the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best TV Supporting Actress.
In 2015, she was seen in the fantasy film ‘Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse’. It was directed by Colin Teague. She next appeared in ‘The Messenger’, a supernatural mystery horror film, released the same year. It was directed by David Blair.
Her next movies were ‘The Dancer’ (2016) and ‘Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire’ (2017). In 2017, she had a guest role in a few episodes of the superhero series ‘Supergirl’. In 2019, she was seen in the fantasy web series ‘Carnival Row’. Its reviews were mostly positive, and the series was nominated at the Satellite Awards in the category of ‘Best Genre’.
