Sagarika Ghatge was born in 1986 in the city of Kolhapur, located in Maharashtra, India, to Vijaysinh Ghatge. Sagarika belongs to the royal lineage of Kagal and Urmila Ghatge. Her grandmother, Sita Raje Ghatge, was the daughter of Tukojirao Holkar III, the Maharaja of Indore. Ghatge has a brother named Shivjeet, who works as an accountant executive at a private firm.
Ghatge lived in Kolhapur until she turned 8. Her family then moved to Ajmer in Rajasthan. She attended the Mayo College Girls School there.
She then joined the H.R. College of Commerce in Mumbai.
Sagarika Ghatge was a national-level hockey player, and that led her to her Bollywood breakthrough.
Sagarika Ghatge was cast in the 2007 sports-themed film Chak De! India, which became her debut in Bollywood. Since the film was based on hockey, she was an appropriate choice for the role of Preeti Sabharwal, the team captain of the state team of Chandigarh, who irked the national team coach in the movie, played by Shahrukh Khan.
The film and all its actors were highly applauded. The role earned Ghatge an endorsement deal with Reebok India.
Unfortunately, Sagarika Ghatge could not repeat the success of Chak De! India with her subsequent releases. In 2009, she was seen in her first solo lead character, as lawyer Urvashi Mathur, opposite Arjun Rampal, in the thriller Fox. The film did not perform well at the box office.
She next played Kamiah in the 2011 romantic drama Miley Naa Miley Hum, starring Kangana Ranaut and Chirag Paswan. Ghatge played Ahana Sharma, the on-screen wife of Emraan Hashmi (who played Samar Grover), in the 2012 crime thriller Rush.
Sagarika Ghatge then turned toward the regional film industry and appeared in the 2013 Marathi romantic film Premachi Goshta, starring as Sonal, opposite National Award-winning actor Atul Kulkarni as Ram Subramanyam. The film earned accolades and did reasonably well at the box office.
In 2015, Ghatge made her TV debut with the sixth season of the Colors TV adventure reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, in which she finished as a finalist. The same year, she was seen in Dildariyaan, her first Punjabi film. Ghatge played Paali, opposite Jassi Gill as Parwaan.
Ghatge played a journalist named Maya Singh in the 2017 thriller Irada. The film received mixed reviews, but the majority of the viewers praised it.
Sagarika Ghatge was cast as ACP Sakshi Ranjan, opposite Karan Singh Grover, in the series Boss – Baap of Special Services, released on the digital platform ALT Balaji in 2019.
Ghatge is part of the cast of Milind Ukey's upcoming bilingual Marathi–Hindi film Monsoon Football.
She has been a prominent face in the fashion industry, too, and has worked with several brands and designers. Ghatge was featured on the cover of the fashion and lifestyle magazine Atelier Diva.
Sagarika Ghatge is quite secretive when it comes to her personal life. Thus, her fans were shocked when she announced her engagement with cricketer Zaheer Khan on April 24, 2017. People were amused at how her reel and real lives were similar, as her debut character, Preeti Sabharwal, too, dated a cricketer in the movie.
Ghatge and Khan got married in November 2017. They initially had a court marriage and threw a grand reception party on November 27 at Hotel Taj Palace in Mumbai.
Ghatge is quite fond of actor Kangana Ranaut. One of her favorite books is The Power of Now-A Guide to Spiritual Engagement by Eckhart Tolle. Even though she follows a strict diet, she loves gorging on spicy mutton, chicken biryani, and Thai green curry on her cheat days. Her all-time favorite restaurant is Thai Pavilion at Taj President in Mumbai.
In an interview, Ghatge once revealed that she would want actor Ranbir Kapoor to play Zaheer Khan in his biopic, if it is ever made.
