Childhood & Early Life

Roman Kemp was born on January 28, 1993, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., to Martin Kemp and Shirlie Holliman. He was the younger of their two children and grew up with his older sister, Harley Moon Kemp. Both his parents were of English descent, and they moved back to England sometime after Roman was born. Roman’s baptism ceremony was performed a few days after his birth, with musician George Michael acting as his godfather.

Roman’s parents were established musicians. Martin was a popular actor, apart from being a member of the famous band ‘Spandau Ballet.’ He appeared in a key role in the series titled ‘EastEnders.’ Roman’s mother, Shirlie, was known for being one half of the singing duo ‘Pepsi and Shirlie.’

Born into an artistic family, Roman was exposed to a high-profile lifestyle ever since he was a child. Many artists, filmmakers, and musicians came to meet his parents from time to time, which made Roman quite comfortable around celebrities while interviewing them later in his life.

He inherited his musical ambitions from his parents and initially planned to become a DJ. It all started when his father gifted him a DJ kit. He would often play and make music on it.

Following his secondary-school education, he joined the ‘Berkhamsted High School,’ located in Hertfordshire, but dropped out later. By then, he had begun his acting career and had appeared in many films and series, too. However, unlike his parents, he did not choose to be a full-time musician. Instead, he opted for a radio career. One reason for this was his lack of success as a songwriter.

He also signed a record deal with ‘Universal Music,’ as a DJ. He began his modeling career, too, and was part of campaigns for ‘Topshop’ and ‘ASOS.’

The same year, he appeared in short films such as ‘Karma Magnet’ and ‘Days.’ He also appeared in a guest role in the series titled ‘Pitch Invasion TV.’

In November 2014, he joined the ‘Capital Radio Network.’ ‘Capital FM’ happens to be a network encompassing 12 independent radio stations and is currently among the most successful British radio channels. Over time, his popularity grew. He worked as a DJ and also conducted many celebrity interviews. His popularity continued to soar even about a year later, when he was given a Saturday-evening spot, too.

In February 2016, he was promoted to host another show, titled ‘The Capital Evening Show,’ appearing between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weeknights. He also continued to present his Saturday and Sunday shows.

In 2017, he was given the duty of hosting a show called ‘Capital Breakfast,’ along with Vick Hope. With this, he got a new slot, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. As a result of being over-burdened with work, he quit his evening slot. A year after he began hosting the show, he got Sonny Jay, a budding British musician, as his co-host. He has since been associated with the show and is known as the face of ‘Capital FM.
