Hayley Orrantia is an American actress, singer and songwriter. Most people recognise her as Erica Goldberg in the comedy TV series ‘The Goldbergs’. However, she considers herself primarily a musician. Music is her first love she maintains; it is something that she started dabbling in since she was only 9 years old. By the time she turned 12, music became serious enough for her to start training professionally. She ventured into songwriting at 13 and was only 14 when she recorded her first album of cover songs. Since then there has been no looking back. Orrantia was born in the USA but has Hispanic roots. Though she grew up speaking only English and has never lived in Mexico she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage. She endeavours to keep it alive by learning to speak Spanish and creating songs in the language. ‘Hasta Verte’ a song she recorded in Spanish is one such attempt.
Hayley Orrantia’s professional music journey took off seriously in 2010 when she recorded the background vocals for the song ‘Magic of a Friend’ for the Disney film ‘Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure’. The same year she sang the background vocals for Demi Lovato for the soundtrack of ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam’ followed by background vocals for Miley Cyrus in ‘Hannah Montana Forever’.
Her break in acting came when she was cast for an ad campaign for a company named ‘Sprint’ in 2011. She was also soon seen in the role of Penny in the 2011 film ‘Cooper and the Castle Hills Gang’.
Orrantia auditioned for the first season of ‘The X Factor USA’ in the summer of 2011. She was selected for the show based on her YouTube video submission. However, she got rejected as a soloist during the boot camp. After this, she and three other soloists Dani Knights, Paige Elizabeth Ogle and Cari Fletcher who had also been rejected as soloists were brought together as a group called ‘Lakoda Rayne’. The group mentored by Paula Abdul made it to the top nine in the show.
Since 2013 Hayley Orrantia has been part of the main star cast in the TV series ‘The Goldbergs’, a period drama set in the 1980s. Orrantia plays the character of Erica Goldberg in this family sitcom. Her character is loosely based on the show creator Adam Goldberg’s brother Eric. Being a singer, Orrantia had suggested that her character on the show might sing as well and so the singer aspect of the character was written in. ‘The Goldbergs’ not only made her a household name but she was also recognised for her acting prowess when she was nominated in 2014 for the ‘Imagen Awards’ for Best Supporting Actress Television.
Hayley Orrantia made her film debut in the 2016 film ‘God’s Not Dead 2’. Her character, Brooke Thawley, was one of the main characters of the film. Orrantia has also appeared the TV series ‘Roommates’ in 2016 and in the spinoff of ‘The Goldbergs’ called ‘Schooled’, in 2019.
Orrantia continues to create songs and perform whenever she is not shooting, belting out popular melodies such as ‘Strong, Sweet and Southern’, ’Give Me Back Sunday’ ‘Love Sick’ and a Spanish number ‘Hasta Verte’. In May 2019 she released an album ‘The Way Out’. With heartfelt lyrics and soulful singing, she tells of her personal experience of love and betrayal through her songs in this album.
