Famous Norwegian Athletes

Karsten Warholm is a Norwegian athlete who won the gold medal in the men's 400 meters hurdles event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Apart from winning the gold medal, he also broke his own world record by finishing the race in 45.94 seconds. In 2021, Karsten Warholm won the prestigious World Male Athlete of the Year award.

The youngest of the Ingebrigtsen runner brothers from Norway, Jakob Ingebrigtsen was 17 when he won both the 1500m and 5000m at the 2018 European Championships. Trained by his award-winning sports coach father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, he also won a gold in the 1500 m. at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The eldest of the Ingebrigtsen runner brothers from Norway, Henrik Ingebrigtsen is a 2-time Olympian. He also won a gold in 1500m at the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki. In 2018, he won the Payton Jordan Invitational by 0.005 seconds, while the following year, he set a 3000m Norwegian record.

Andreas Thorkildsen is a Norwegian retired track and field athlete who took part in the javelin throw event. He won two Olympic gold medals, two gold medals at the European Championships and one gold medal at the World Championships. Thorkildsen is the first male javelin thrower to simultaneously be World, European, and Olympic Champion in the history of javelin throw.

One of the most successful female long-distance runners of her time, Norwegian athlete Ingrid Kristiansen was a World Champion and a European Champion. However, she missed out on an Olympic medal, as she finished 4th in the women’s marathon. She was also a talented cross-country skier in her teens.

Filip Ingebrigtsen is a middle distance runner from Norway best known for winning the gold medal in the men's 1500 meters event at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam. The following year, he won the bronze medal in the same event at the World Championships in London. In 2018, Ingebrigtsen won a gold medal at the European Cross Country Championships.

Sven O. Høiby was a Norwegian journalist and hurdler. He represented the sports club from Kristiansand and had completed a 400-meter hurdles event in 58.0 seconds in 1959. Sven O. Høiby is best remembered as the father of Mette-Marit, Crown Princess of Norway. He achieved national prominence after his daughter married Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway.

Amalie Iuel is a Danish-Norwegian track and field athlete who specializes in 400 meters hurdles. Although she was born in Denmark, Iuel switched her athletic allegiance to Norway in 2015 and represented the country in the 400 meters hurdles event at the IAAF World Championships in 2015. In 2019, Amalie Iuel won a bronze medal at the 2019 Summer Universiade.
