Fred Astaire Filmography
Fred Astaire was an American actor and dancer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential dancers of the world. In a career spanning over 76 years, he starred in Broadway and London musicals, musical films, television specials, and so on.
Though Astaire acted in several films, it was for his dancing skills that he is best remembered for. In fact, it would be safe to say that the history of dance on films began with Astaire. American Film Institute named him as the fifth greatest male star of Classic Hollywood cinema. Talking about his cinematic contribution, Astaire together with Roger made nine films, ‘The Gay Divorcee’, ‘Roberta’, ‘Top Hat’, ‘Follow the Fleet’, ‘Swing Time’, ‘Shall We Dance’, and ‘Carefree’ all of which became the biggest moneymakers for RKO.
An avant-garde artist, Astaire’s career as an actor was a mixed bag with generally successful outcomes. Some of his most successful films include ‘You’ll Never Get Rich’, ‘You Were Never Lovelier’, ‘The Sky’s The Limit’, ‘Royal Wedding’, and so on. While the film ‘The Towering Inferno’ gained him his only Academy nomination, there were some films such as ‘The Belle of New York’ and ‘Silk Stockings’ that failed badly at the box office.
