Hamish Linklater is an American character actor who is best known for his role of Matthew Kimble in the series ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine.’ He has worked in theater, movies, and television. Born to a mother who is a well-known vocal coach and acting teacher, he never had any doubt that acting would be his first call. He was also sure that one day he would make it to Broadway due to his early exposure to theater shows. He is an actor who excels in Shakespearean productions. However, Shakespeare is not his only specialty; he is versatile and is equally at ease performing in drama, comedy, action, and suspense plays. His performances have always garnered rave reviews from the critics and audiences alike. He is also a playwright and ‘Vandal’ was the first play he wrote. Career
Hamish Linklater left college midway and moved to New York to start an acting career in theater. Once he had made a name for himself on stage, he moved to Los Angeles to star in the film ‘Groove’ (2000). The movie did not do too well, but he soon made a mark with the HBO movie titled ‘Live from Baghdad’ in 2003. In this movie, he essayed the role of Richard Roth, who is a CNN correspondent. He was next seen in two television shows, ‘L.A. Dragnet’ (2003) and ‘American Dreams’ (2004). He scored big with the movie ‘Fantastic Four’ (2005), in which he essayed the role of Leonard Kirk, protagonist Victor Von Doom’s right-hand man.
In 2006, he landed the role of Mathew Kimble in the series ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine.’ The show ran for five successful seasons (2006-10) and he had fun playing the onscreen brother of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Christine on the show. The same year he was seen in Keith Bunin’s ‘The Busy World Is Hushed,’ a play that looks into the paradoxes that we experience in our families and within ourselves. In 2011, he appeared in ‘The Future’ opposite Miranda July. The film got great reviews and was nominated for the Golden Bear Award at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival; however, it did not fare well at the box office. The same year, he made his Broadway debut with ‘Seminar,’ starring Jeff Goldblum, Lily Rabe, Jerry O’Connell, and Hettienne Park.
Over the course of the next several years, Hamish Linklater’s career saw a steady rise with both television and movie appearances. In 2012, he was seen in the film ‘Battleship.’ His next movie, titled ‘42’ (2013), was a biopic on Jackie Robinson; Linklater’s effortless portrayal of Ralph Branca, who was the pitcher for Brooklyn Dodgers, was highly appreciated. On the television front, his fans got to see him in ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ (2012), ‘The Newsroom’ (2013), ‘The Crazy Ones’ (2013-14), and ‘Fargo’ (2017).
He acted in the film ‘The Big Short’ (2015). The movie is about the financial crisis of 2008 and Hamish Linklater manages to leave his mark amongst a star cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Jeremy Strong and Brad Pitt. Hamish was nominated for the ‘Gold Derby Award’ and won the National Board of Review Award for Best Ensemble for this movie in 2016. His more recent movies are ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (2017) and ‘Unicorn Store’ (2019).

Hamish Linklater was born on July 7, 1976 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, USA. His father is James Lincoln Cormeny and his mother is Kristin Linklater, a Professor of Theater and Chair of the Acting Division at Columbia University. His mother founded Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts when Hamish was quite young; he basically grew up with a theater right in his backyard! She is also known for inventing a voice technique called “Linklater voice.” He started acting in his mother’s theater company at the young age of eight. He was raised by his mother as a single parent and learned quite a deal from her. He graduated from Commonwealth School in Boston in 1994 and went on to study at the Amherst College. He had chosen English as his major but left college midway to join a theater in New York.
Hamish Linklater and Jessica Goldberg got married in 2002. Jessica is a playwright and they first met when he auditioned for a role in her play ‘Refuge.’ Their daughter, Lucinda Rose Linklater, was born in 2007. Their marriage ended in 2012. He began dating Lily Rabe in 2014. He had first met her in 2010 when they were both part of the play ‘Merchant of Venice’. In 2017, they had a baby girl.
