Cartoonist Alison Bechdel is best known for her Dykes to Watch Out For strip, which gained a lot of popularity in various LGBT weeklies. The strip’s prime character is believed to be modeled on her. The lesbian artist’s works gave rise to the Bechdel Test, which targets gender inequality in Hollywood.

Marjane Satrapi is a graphic novelist, illustrator, cartoonist, children's book author, and film director. Satrapi achieved international recognition in the early-2000s after releasing her critically acclaimed graphic novels. She is best known for writing and directing an animated biographical drama film titled Persepolis, which received nominations at prestigious award ceremonies, such as the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Golden Globes.

Immortalized in the Irish ballad Grace, Irish cartoonist Grace Gifford was a regular contributor to many reputed publications such as The Irish Review. She was part of the Republican movement and married her lover Joseph Plunkett just hours before he was killed by firing squad for his invoolvement in the Easter Rising.

Swedish-speaking Finnish illustrator and cartoonist Minna Sundberg was 25 when she became the first Finn to win a Reuben Award. Known for her works such as A Redtail's Dream and Lovely People, she is now devoted to Christianity and supports an online Christian bookstore on her website, Hummingfluff Studio.

Power Paola is a Colombian-Ecuadorian cartoonist and author of graphic memoirs. Paola's work deals with themes of feminism, sexuality, personal identity, and family. One of her best-known works, Virus Tropical, was adapted into a film in 2017. Power Paola is also known as one of the most important members of a comics collective called Chicks on Comics.
