Lay Bankz is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US. She has Eritrean roots. In August 2020, long before she was a social media star, she started posting on TikTok.

Lay Bankz soared to global social media fame with her comic skits and dance videos on her TikTok account, thelaybankz. Over the years, she has amassed millions of likes and followers on her TikTok channel. She often posts TikTok clips set to tracks by popular artists, such as Beyoncé. One of her TikTok clips had her lip-syncing to a track by Sexyy Red.

A budding singer too, Lay has released a few original tracks on various music platforms. She mostly experiments with club, R&B, rap, and hip-hop, and mixes these with electric dance sounds. Her song Boyfriend N. 2 became viral within 2 weeks and was played more than 250,000 times. She is managed by the Artist Partner Group.
