Jason Derulo is an American singer-songwriter who rose to international fame with his debut single ‘Whatcha Say’ which peaked at No. 1 in the U.S. and New Zealand, and sold over five million digital downloads. He released his much anticipated second single shortly and its immediate success made him one of the hottest singing stars in the world. Born to Haitian parents in Florida, Jason developed an early interest in music after being exposed to a variety of musical genres at a young age. He started singing as a little boy and became fascinated with creating his own lyrics. Blessed with a creative mind and a knack for playing with words, he started writing songs when he was just eight! It did not take long for the talented boy to realize that it was his destiny to become a singer and thus he embarked on a musical career while still in his teens. Childhood & Early Life
He was born as Jason Joel Desrouleaux on 21 September, 1989, in Miami, Florida, to Haitian parents as the youngest of their three children. His family is a close-knit middle-class one, and he is very close to his parents and siblings.
He was naturally inclined towards music from childhood and started singing as a small child. He was just eight when he began dabbling with words to write his own songs.
He went to New York to study musical theater, and embarked on a musical career while still in his teens.
As a highly creative youngster who had a way with words, he started writing songs for other musicians. As a songwriter, he has written for the likes of Diddy, Grant Goan, Donnie Klang, Cassie, and Lil Wayne.

Career
After having started out as a songwriter he aspired to become a singer and signed a contract with the minor recording label Beluga Heights which later became a part of the Warner Music Group.
Jason Derulo released his debut single ‘Whatcha Say’ in May 2009. The song debuted at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually peaked at No. 1. The single sold over five million digital downloads, gaining an RIAA certification of triple platinum, thus launching his career as a successful singer.
Buoyed by the success of his debut single, he released his second single, ‘In My Head’ a few months later in December 2009. The single not only topped the charts in Australia, Poland and the United Kingdom, but also peaked within the top ten of the charts in several other countries.
He released his debut album, ‘Jason Derulo’ in 2010, which featured both of the hit singles he had released the previous year. Even though it received mixed reviews from critics, it became a huge commercial success and sold approximately 43,000 copies in its first week itself.
In 2011, his second album, ‘Future History’, was out. Derulo also served as the executive producer of the album which featured the lead single ‘Don't Wanna Go Home’. The album reached the top ten in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom though it was not as commercially successful as its predecessor.
His next album, ‘Tattoos’ was released in September 2013. This album was significantly different from his previous albums, and highlighted his sensitive side. The music was a combination of R&B, pop music and electronic dance music, and the album featured American hip-hop recording artist 2 Chainz.
He became the No. 1 most played male artist on all of radio in 2014, with nine songs reaching the Top 10 on the Top 40 chart. The same year, his album ‘Tattoos’ was reissued as ‘Talk Dirty’ which debuted at No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart with 44,000 copies sold in its first week.

His self-titled debut studio album, ‘Jason Derulo’ peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and featured the super-hit singles ‘Whatcha Say’, ‘In My Head’, and ‘Ridin’ Solo’. The album was certified platinum in Australia and Sweden and gold in several other countries.
Awards & Achievements
He won two Teen Choice Awards in 2010: Choice R&B Track for the single ‘In My Head’ and Choice R&B Album for ‘Jason Derulo’.
In 2011 he received the BMI Pop Music Award in the category Songwriter of the Year for the songs ‘In My Head’, ‘Ridin' Solo’, ’Whatcha Say’, and ‘ Replay’.
Personal Life & Legacy

He began dating singer Jordin Sparks in 2012. The couple was very much in love and open about their relationship. She was featured in the video for his song, ‘Marry Me’, in which he proposed to her, leading to speculations about the next step in their relationship. However the couple eventually drifted apart and split in 2014. Next, Jason was in a relationship with model and actress Jena Frumes. They together have a son, Jason King. They parted ways in September 2021.
