Greek Female Sportspersons

The daughter of former WTA player Angelikí Kanellopoúlou, Sakkari was introduced to tennis at age six. Greek tennis sensation Maria Sakkari has had a career-high ranking of number 6 in singles. Known for her aggressive style, Sakkari was born and raised in Athens but moved to Barcelona at 18 to train.

Athina Onassis Roussel is a French-Greek heiress and equestrian. She is the granddaughter and the only surviving descendant of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Her parents are Aristotle's daughter Christina Onassis and her fourth husband, Thierry Roussel. She began riding horses as a child and is now a competitive showjumper. Following Christina Onassis’s death, Athina became her sole heiress.  

Alexi Pappas is a Greek-American runner, actor, writer, and filmmaker. In 2016, she set the national record for 10,000m at the Rio Olympics where she represented Greece. As a filmmaker, Alexi Pappas is credited with bankrolling and writing Olympic Dreams, the first fictional film to be shot in an Olympic village. 

Julia Apostoli is a Soviet-born former professional tennis player. She has represented both the Soviet Union and Greece internationally. The daughter of football player Sergei Salnikov, she was introduced to sports as a child. She made her debut with the Soviet Union Fed Cup team in 1980.  She won a gold medal in women's doubles at the 1984 Friendship Games. 

Katerina Stefanidi is a Greek pole vaulter best known for winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2017, she won the gold medal at the IAAF World Championships. Stefanidi has also won two gold medals at the European Championships in 2016 and 2018. Katerina Stefanidi is considered the greatest Greek female athlete of the modern era. 

Cynisca was a Spartan princess best remembered as the first female Olympic champion. Cynisca and her horses took part in the sport of chariot racing in 396 BC and emerged as the first woman to win at the Olympics. At a time when women were not allowed to compete in the Olympics, Cynisca not only competed but competed against men.

Vasiliki Millousi is a Greek former artistic gymnast who helped Greece win a bronze medal at the 1999 European Team Championships. Millousi, who won seven gold medals and three silver medals in the World Cup Series, represented Greece in three Olympic Games as well.

Anna Korakaki is a Greek competitive shooter best known for winning the gold medal in the women's 25m pistol category and the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro; she became the first Greek female to win two medals in the same Olympics. Anna Korakaki was also the 2018 World Champion.

Sofia Bekatorou is a sailing champion from Greece. She has participated in hundreds of main class sailing events and is the winner of one Olympic gold medal. She was the flag-bearer for her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first female flag bearer for Greece in the history of the Summer Olympics.  

Former Greek pole vaulter Errika Prezerakou had her Olympic dreams shattered twice due to injuries. She won various Greek and Balkan championships and is now a motivational speaker and alternative therapy coach who promotes the Replayce method. She also won the Greek version of Dancing with the Stars.
