Famous Ghanaian Media Personalities

W. E. B. Du Bois was an American civil rights activist, sociologist, and Pan-Africanist. Du Bois played an instrumental role in fighting for full civil rights for people of color around the world. A co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Du Bois also played an important role as the leader of the Niagara Movement.

The son of a Ghanaian mother and a Lebanese father, Majid Michel soared to fame with his role of a Lebanese boy, Shaker, in the Ghanaian series Things We Do for Love. He later gained popularity with Nollywood films such as Silent Scandals and delivered an award-winning performance in Somewhere in Africa.

Ghanaian actor, comedian and television-presenter Akwasi Boadi, more-famous as Akrobeto (who 'nose' tomorrow) and known for size of his nose, garnered international-recognition through his comic-acts, some of which went viral on YouTube. Different satirical-shows like Radio Arvyla has satirized his speech while playing their own clips. Akrobeto won overall Entertainment Personality of the Year award at 2021 Entertainment Achievement Awards.  

Ghanaian actor Nana Ama McBrown gained popularity with the series Tentacles. Raised by her aunt after her parents’ divorce, she grew up to get a lead role after responding a radio audition call. She also hosts the Ghanaian cookery show McBrown Kitchen. Tabloids have often linked her romantically with co-star Omar Sheriff Captan.

Ghanaian journalist and BBC World News anchor Komla Dumor had soared to fame with his program Focus on Africa. Grandson of Philip Gbeho, who had composed the Ghanaian national anthem, Dumor boasted of a Harvard degree. New African magazine named him one of the 100 most influential Africans of 2013.

Chris Attoh is a Ghanaian actor, on-air personality, film director, TV presenter, and producer. He is best known for his portrayal of Kwame Mensah in the popular Nigerian soap opera, Tinsel. Apart from playing important roles in many Nigerian films, Chris Attoh has also hosted a couple of award ceremonies, including the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in 2016. 

Berla Mundi is a Ghanaian media personality, voice artist, and women's advocate. A former beauty pageant contestant, Mundi started her career with GHOne TV and went on to work with TV3 Ghana, her current channel. Berla Mundi is the recipient of several awards including the Most Stylish Media Personality award at Claudia Lumor's Glitz Style Awards.

Award-winning Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah is best known for presenting shows such as The Divas Show. She also heads the Ghanaian Women's Premier League committee and is a football lover. She is also a philanthropist and owns the charitable organization Hearts Wide Open, which addresses medical and educational concerns.

Afia Schwarzenegger is a Ghanaian media personality who achieved popularity after the release of the eponymous TV series. She is also credited with establishing a couple of humanitarian organizations. While the Leave2Live foundation was established as a domestic violence support group, Owontaa Street Ministry was founded to feed the underprivileged in Ghana.

Margaret Busby is a Ghanaian-born British writer, editor, publisher, and broadcaster. In the 1960s, Busby became the first black female and Britain's youngest book publisher when she co-founded Allison and Busby, a London-based publishing house. In 2020, she featured in the 100 Great Black Britons list. In 2021, Margaret Busby won the prestigious London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ghanaian radio and TV broadcaster and popular media personality Jessica Opare-Saforo made headlines when, in 2022, she quit Citi FM after working with the radio station for almost 2 decades. The award-winning host is known for her hit programs such as Brunch in the Citi and Sister Sister.

Serwaa Amihere is a Ghanaian news presenter and broadcast journalist. She is best known for winning the Television Female Newscaster of the Year Award at the famous Radio and Television Personality Awards in 2018. Serwaa Amihere, who currently works with GH One TV, has also won other awards such as the Golden Movie Award and National Communication Award.

Deborah Owusu-Bonsu is a Ghanaian musician, television presenter, and model. She achieved popularity when she started hosting The Late Nite Celebrity Show broadcast by e.tv Ghana. Deborah Owusu-Bonsu also hosted Gliterrati for a brief period after moving to GHOne Television before the show was taken over by Berla Mundi.

Named the 2020 Wikimedian of the Year, Ghanaian media personality Sandister Tei co-founded the Wikimedia Ghana User Group. She also pioneered the development of the various sub-Saharan communities of Wikipedia. A skilled journalist, she has also worked for Voice of America and covered the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana.

Afia Pokua is a Ghanaian media personality best known for winning the Radio Female Presenter of the Year award at the Radio and Television Personalities Awards in 2020. Afia Pokua, who currently works at the Despite Media Group as the Head of Programs, is also credited with founding a gender parity activist group called the SugarDem Ministry.

Seasoned Ghanaian politician, gender-activist, media and communications consultant, and governance and leadership practitioner Akua Dansua is a member of National Democratic Congress. She held-office as Member of the Ghana Parliament for North Dayi for over a decade and served as Minister for Women and Children's Affairs, for Youth and Sports and for Tourism. She also served as Ambassador to Germany.

Popular Ghanaian broadcaster and journalist Frank Kobina Parkes was also a talented poet, known for his book Songs from the Wilderness. He was also one of the pillars of the négritude intellectual and literary movement in Africa. The poem African Heaven remains to be his best-known work.
