Mark Gatiss was first seen in the television drama series ‘Harry’ in 1993. The following year, he starred as ‘Dr. William Bruffin’ in the direct-to-video science-fiction film ‘P.R.O.B.E.: The Zero Imperative.’ He next appeared in ‘P.R.O.B.E.: The Devil of Winterborne’ (1995) and ‘P.R.O.B.E.: Unnatural Selection’ (1996). Gatiss was also the writer of the P.R.O.B.E film series. He was next seen in the 1998 three-part BBC Two black comedy-crime drama series ‘In the Red.’ The following year, he joined hands with Jeremy Dyson, Steve Pemberton, and Reece Shearsmith to create the British comedy horror sitcom ‘The League of Gentlemen.’ The show aired its final episode in 2002. Gatiss also appeared in television series like ‘Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)’ (2000), ‘Barbara’ (2000), and ‘Spaced’ (2001).
In 2001, he made his big-screen debut in the erotic comedy thriller film ‘Birthday Girl’ directed by Jez Butterworth. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. He went on to star in the 2003 British drama film ‘Bright Young Things’ which earned mixed reviews from critics. In 2004, he starred as ‘Glenn Bulb’ in the BBC black comedy television sitcom ‘Nighty Night.’ He remained a part of the series until it went off-air in 2005. Gatiss was also the writer of the series. He continued on to appear in television series like ‘Catterick’ (2004), ‘Footballers' Wives’ (2004), ‘Agatha Christie's Marple’ (2004), ‘The Quatermass Experiment’ (2005), ‘Funland’ (2005), and ‘The Wind in the Willows’ (2006). In 2007, he became a part of the British science fiction television programme ‘Doctor Who.’ He starred in 5 episodes and was also one of the writers of the show. That same year, he also portrayed ‘Apsley Cherry-Garrard’ in the BBC Television docudrama ‘The Worst Journey in the World’ directed by Damon Thomas.
Gatiss went on to appear in television films and series like ‘Clone’ (2008), ‘Crooked House’ (2008), ‘Psychoville’ (2009), ‘Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen’ (2009), ‘Midsomer Murders’ (2010), ‘Sherlock’ (2010-2017), ‘The Crimson Petal and the White’ (2011), ‘Being Human’ (2012), and ‘Psychobitches’ (2013). In 2014, he joined the cast of the American fantasy drama television series ‘Game of Thrones’ created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. He played the role of ‘Tycho Nestoris’ and remained a part of the series until 2017. In 2015, he starred as ‘Dettweiler’ in the American science fantasy horror film ‘Victor Frankenstein’ directed by Paul McGuigan. The film was panned by critics and was a box office bomb. He next starred in films like ‘Dad's Army’ (2016), ‘The Mercy’ (2018), ‘The Favourite’ (2018), ‘The Father’ (2020), and ‘Locked Down’ (2021).
He was last seen in the 2021 documentary film ‘The Sparks Brothers’ directed by Edgar Wright. The film earned praise from critics. He is all set to appear in the upcoming British war drama film ‘Operation Mincemeat.’ Gatiss will also be seen in the upcoming American action spy film ‘Mission Impossible 7’ directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
