Lee Marvin Filmography
Lee Marvin was one of the most prolific and celebrated American actors. Winner of an Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe and NBR Award, Marvin was known for his distinctive style and husky voice.
Marvin first began as a supporting actor doing war characters or villainous roles, his debut being in ‘You’re in the Navy Now’. It was eventually by the mid-1950s that Marvin started getting meaty roles that gave him creative freedom to express. ‘The Comancheros’, ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’, ‘Reef’, ‘The Killers’ were some of Marvin’s successful early films. He hit the jackpot with a comedic act in the offbeat western film ‘Cat Ballou’. Marked as his best role ever, it earned him an Oscar in the Best Actor category. A streak of successful films followed including ‘The Professionals’, ‘Point Blank’, ‘Monte Walsh’, ‘Pocket Money’, ‘The Iceman Cometh’, ‘Avalanche Express’, ‘The Big Red One’.
Marvin’s career had some significant hits but some of his films also failed at the box office. Amongst his flop films, ‘Hell In the Pacific’ was one of the biggest money losers for ABC Films.
